Since I've had my car the central locking has never worked. At first it didnt really consern me however now im getting a little paranoid about accidently leaving it open. Also i believe its a related problem but the auto locking function doesnt work at the magic 24km/h. You can see the switches trying to flip over but they just dont get there, and they continue to try untill you flip them over. now i used the search and found that nobody has had the same problems. However there was mention of a door locking motor so i am suspect of this. Any help or ideas are welcome, i wont have be able to use the net for a week so if you have any questions i will get back to you then. thanks again and sorry about the essay.

There have been some suggestions, eg the motor, and also some rubber stops that get sticky so things don't work as they should. When I use my key, I can feel as if something is moving over a ridge, then it moves smoothly, suggesting that something has worn out of shape. It would be good if this issue got investigated properly, as more people are starting to have issues with the electric locks. Does anyone that is clever have a lock they can study to see where wear might be occurring?

Investigate what? It is the motor. If it don't work properly then replace it. They are cheap like model car motors. Replacement is the only real cure. The door lock position switches can come adrift too so the door control module doesn't know that the lock has closed and keeps trying anyway.

Mark, I am wondering if some of the metal links have worn causing it to feel rough as I turn the key. Any problem there would also affect the motors ability to move the lock mechanism most likely?

I have the same problem in my V8, but only on the driver's side. Doesn't really bother me since I just have to flick it with my hand. What does bother me is the fact that the remote locking doesn't work, so I have to use the key to lock it. How much are these motors Mark? Toyota would obviously supply them so a part number would be great. (This is your cue Don)

Yes. If caught early the motors can be cleaned and lubed but the effort isn't really worth it. Worn links and cable and stuff will make it worse but a new motor fixes them. I don't know a great deal about the links and fiiting of these things. I won't do them. Even my own car was done by my son. In fact I don't work on any cars except my own anymore. Removing and fitting stuff can be done by any monkey and I won't waste my time doing it.

This has happened to me within the last week. For a couple of days the driver's door locking became erratic then it stopped. Spraying lithium grease into the lock area did not help. Shortly I will get around to searching for a tutorial on removing the door panel without breaking anything. Mark, by "model car motor" are you talking about the classic 540, such as is used in hand held vacuum cleaners, or did you have something else in mind? On another topic by association, if you have one of those dust-busters and want it to work better, get along to a model car racing club and buy a second hand battery pack (4 or 6 cells) from one of the top drivers. They will sell packs which no longer win races but otherwise are in great shape, although they may still not be cheap. Make sure you buy one compatible with your charger (NiCd or NIMh). Use these to replace the existing battery pack in your dust-buster. For extra oomph, make sure you put in one more cell than you took out. Now your vacuum will really scream and suck.

The old electric car racing sets had a very similar motor. About 1.5 to 2 inches long and about an inch diameter with flattened sides. Shaft about 1/8". Some were 3V and some 12v with battery powered stuff being 3v. Brushes were always the main problem and worn commutators. I'm not sure if one of these will work but they should be cheap enough to try. Then again, Toyota can surprise with parts pricing. So far I haven't had to get a new one. I've diagnosed a lot of them but won't change 'em for any amount of beer, money or sex....well maybe..

Ceramic caps do have a bit of a habit of going short circuit but I don't think so...I'll give ya a supply of them, but I am not fitting them If you ever played with those model motors you will remember that it's always the brushes and/or commutator worn and once you get that working the bearings up. Personally I'd want to stick a new motor in after going through all the hassle to get the old one out. It's in the door lock assembly so maybe you gotta buy the whole thing. That sounds more like the Toyota we all know and love.

I was told it was the motor but it is better to replace the whole lock (as in all the internal bits but you use the same key). And second hand locks dont go for too much but I dont know how long they will last for.

| I believe the (RH) stands for Right hand side and (LH) stands for lefthand side - referring to the the part numbers in the diagram.
I am using this website for the part numbers: http://www.japan-parts.eu/toyota/jp/1992/soarer/uzz30-acpvk/4_321140_006_/body/6703_front-door-lock-handle#69320 |
