Pretty sure the stock ALT is 120A so if you work out how much more continuous current your new stereo will add to that and buy that size.

Well the old system probably drew a few amps too considering it would probably have been a 6.1 with two amps right?

6.1 with two amps yes. but i wonder what they are rated at. i dont think fronts would be more than 20watts rms and sub maybe 50-60rms?

111 Amps (or thereabouts) is the potential current draw if your amps in total are rated at about 1600w, remember you have a volume knob.

If your going to have it cranked upto full volume every day you drive, aswell as listen to such music that demands lots of excursion very frequently, then you may be getting close to the 111w Potential current draw.

just go the biggest aftermarket alternator you can find/afford, as that is the only way to safely keep power up to your system.

and it is probably cheaper than the alternative anyway, which is a deep cycle battery like an optima yellow top, and a capacitor.

that being said, my last car had a 1500wrms system in it, and a 90amp alternator. even with the aircon on and the HID's on, it would have to be turned up VERY loud at the traffic lights to get the lights to dim.

maybe just see how you go to start with?

Stop worrying about alternators, if other people on here aren't having much problems even cranking it up extremely loud I doubt you will.

I would not know why you would like to turn it up above the continuous output, you'll force the speakers into clipping and fry your amps and what not.

Only thing you might have a problem with is the lights dimming at night while your blasting the neighborhood with 1600W of power, and if the case that you really want your headlights not to dim while your system is blowing your bumper and body kit off, then you can either install a capacitor or a different alternator.

The amp will clip which then damages the speakers.

Save yourself the money on the alternator first, install the speakers and then if you need an alternator get one.
