Use a period or two?

Terry Bishop wrote on Thursday, June 10, 2010 - 08:21 pm:

Today I fitted a new fuel ECU. The car starts but doesn't always keep running! After a few seconds the rev's drop to zero and an electrical fault is displayed! This doesn't happen every time, sometimes it starts and keeps running; it's intermittent.

Can anyone help me please?

Hi Terry,

What have you done to test this yourself? Why did you have to change the fuel ECU? Before the new ECU how was the car running?

Hi Aiden

The car was having problems starting, sometimes especially from cold it would be turning over for up to ten seconds before it would fire. So .... having read some posts concerning these type of issues i tried the ECU bypass and it started first turn of the key every time even from cold, hence the new pump ecu

hope that helps

Thanks Terry

Thanks for the very neat reply, a pleasure to read.

On this quoted point, I have to ask, did you check the plug and connectors to make sure that they were in good condition still? It sounds like the signal is intermittent.

Your replacement fuel ecu - was it new or second hand? IF you check the diagnostic output for the regular ecu - does it flag a new fuel pump ecu error? Your replacement one may be busted along with your replaced one.

Now I haven't worked on that side of things on the soarer before at all. Haven't needed to yet. I'm asking questions so that when someone who pokes their head into this thread who has experience, they should have a good idea of what's going on and who knows, maybe a slow process of elimination should help.

The last thing that I can think of is the ecu isn't getting the right information to tell the fuel pump ecu to run. But i think that's a series of complex calculations that is based on rpm/throttle position and others..

my Pleasure Aiden
Yes the the ecu was a brand new unit direct from toyota, yes i have looked at the connectors and they look very clean, the location of the ecu is such that it suffers from virtually no ingress of dirt, Toyota have agreed to take the unit back and test it, but they took some persuading, which i'm sorry seemed a bit of a cheek considering it cost me a £160 .... not sure how to check diagnostics for the ecu would that mean links in the port and reading codes off the EMV SCREEN ???? thanks for your response

Terry
