the other day I got what most V8 soarer drivers dread and expect if they haven't already been bitten by it. the klingon message informing that the alternator is not charging (damn it) how inconvenient at 4am. Anyway fearing the worst (anywhere between $300 to $500 of hard earned booze money being blown on just buying a replacement alternator I decided to bite the bullet and pull out my alternator and open it up to see what was wrong and to my absolute joy found out that it was merely the brushes that had died costing a mere $8.00 N.Z to replace and about an hour of my time to do the labor so be aware if your alternator stops working and there is no sign of power steering fluid leaking on your alternator you may just be lucky like me. booze money saved for another weekend !! and not to mention the relief of not having to tackle the power steering pump as well.

Yes, or the regulator pack simply needs replacing :-)

Are there any symptoms that may signal a failing alternator on the V8?

Mark the symptoms i had were the klingon writing flashing in red on my dash for the alternator not charging so I gave the alternator a couple of gentle taps and the warning went away cause the tapping causes the brushes to drop down a little and make contact again.

The sparks replaced three diodes in the alternator regulator - because he couldn't get a replacement alternator- my instructions were to only fix this one and it still cost me $450.
If you do it yourself it would probably cost $10

Daniel You are dead right it is still the best overall comfort handling performance GT I've been in. And I've been in some exotic Marques that cost zillions and don't match it

That warning can also indicate the coil packs need replacing..
My alternator was tested as ok, got them to replace the regulator anyway, and still had the issue.
Replaced the coil packs.. all was good again :-)

Sorry to dig up an old post, But my alternator isn't charging as of tonight. Clingon message first sign. Then testing the voltages under different conditions confirmed it. Its not the traditional oil soaked problem so I'm simply hoping its the brushes.
Where could I get a set asap and what are the part numbers for my 91 uzz31?
