After putting a GT-TL dash in (woot i have a fuel guage now!) it throws an ECT42 error with a flashing OD light.

After reading MANY posts, this error always sends the speedo dead. The thing is, my speedo is fine.

It drives normally, so what could this possibly be? Is there more than one speed sensor?

Ah thanks, any idea on which one I would need? I know that one if for the speedo, but no idea on what the other one is for.

Austen, I have had the same problem for 4 years. It's time to start doing something about it. I have no idea which sensor is no:1 or no:2, so I purchased the 2 from Amayama for $138 posted. Will have them in in 2 weeks.

138 posted for both? That's an awesome price! I had contacted Amayama on Friday about these sensors actaully haha!

As with you, I have no idea which sensor is dead so I just asked for both. Let me know how it goes.

Was your speedo working fine Justin?

My speedo works fine. Every time I drive the car, just as it hits 1.1kms on the trip computer, the ect warning comes up then the flashing of the OD. Every time. Sometimes when I turn on the low beams it gets rid of the dash warning.

Hey Justin, my sensors are on the way finally.
Have you received yours yet? I'm keen to see if it fixed the problem.

Put both of them in over the weekend, unfortunately did nothing. The error still appears. It's probably the wiring, which I will check later on. Hope you have better luck mate.

Hi guys perhaps we can form the error 42 club. I have had this problem for about three months and have had niall wanting to recon the transmission which sounds like overkill. Strange thing about why it would occur just at the same time you put a dash in Austen. Funny thing is that It happened to me after dash removal and reinstall as well. Im going to start with replace speed sensors, replace dash, recon transmission. Justin I take it you have two spare speed sensors now? would you like to sell them on the basis that I will pay your expense if they fix my problem?

I just got my speed sensors today, but the motor is still in bits while I get a replacement head sorted so I can't test them out.

Ben, did you do a dash swap or did you simply remove and reinstall your dash?

I never got an error with my old dash but it wasn't one with a scrolling screen so hmm..

Strange problem though!

It could be an earthing problem? No idea how it's earthed though.

It may be worth throwing an earth wire on the transmission case to the negative terminal on the battery. Would only take a couple minutes if you have some spare wire laying around.

Austen i just had some guys take out and replace the dash cos they put a gps sensor on top. i doubt this is the problem but its curious it happened just afterwards. I have read another thread mentioning the same thing, then i read another saying that the dash 'cleans up' the signal from the speed sensor to the ecu...whatever that means. Justin has agreed to sell me his speed sensors so will let you know how goes. like you my speedo works fine and the ect error shows up at almost exactly 1.1kms. i recently noticed the doors dont lock either. not sure when this started. the tranny seems to shift fine so im still thinking it is the sensors. please let me know how you go.

also youre right there are two sensors. apparently there is a different mechanism for both. error 42 relates to sensor 1 but apparently this could also indicate an error with sensor 2 (explaining why the speedo still works). An auto shop i visited who know lots about these transmissions suggested that it could be a shifting problem which might not be noticable cos of the automatic pressure changes to the solenoids (!?). Damian Ware suggested to me that its likely to be either one of the sensors or the torque converter locking up. I havent thought of earthing of the tranny. My earthing should be BETTER if anything cos the guys that did the stereo install (prior to the fault) put in an extra earth - but its an interesting idea. apparently also the sensors can be tested in situ with a voltmeter - ive heard 600ohms resistance quoted but not sure on which sensor.

580-680ohms for both sensors in the japanese manual. Damn I wish I could read the rest of the thing though!

Hmm, can you change the gear selector with the ignition off without having to press the ejector seat button (red shift lock button next to the shifter)? I can.

Austen. no. no i cant. hold on wtf? noone can do that! just checked to make sure too...nup. could you before!? from memory that button just pushes down a rather large plastic lever- more of a physical thing than electric...maybe theres a coincidental problem around the selector housing also?

I've always been able to shift without pushing the red button haha. Tell chicks it's the NOS button, I hit it and floor the gas at the same time lol. OH HEE HEE WOW U HAZ NAWS :-O

But hmm okay, yeah I've seen the big white plastic lever thingy, it does nothing on mine. I was hoping it was a sensor attached to that.

I've found some diagnostic diagrams in english, but I can't test them as I am unable to start my car for the next week or so :-(

Austen your lock mechanism is just broken, should have nothing to do with your problem (Err 42). Some of them just die and you can then change out of P without pushing the red button.

Interesing issues, either,
* Sensors (speed 1 or 2, maybe check the 3rd convertor lockup sensor, its exactly the same as sensor 2).
* Wiring, make sure good connections either end.
* Dash might have an issue, try a spare one from a friend.
* ECU might have an issue try one from a friend.

Hi fellers,
hope you don't mind me hijacking your postings but while you're on the issue of sorting your speedo's I was wondering if anyone knows which output operates the speedo in the dash. I need to get a feed for an aftermarket speedo cum reversing warning system I'm fitting to my 1jzgte mounted Corona Mark 2. The old girl had a cable drive speedo and I don't use the actual Soarer dash. A signal from the computer would be best I guess as the dash loom is not used. Hope you can help me out,
thanks David

Just an update, I put the old dash back in, and now the doors lock and I get no error code.

These things are really fussy!

Another update, I finally got the emanage ultimate installed, and it doesn't get a speed reading. Yet the dash displays the speed still.
