Hi guys....

I have what should be a simple and straightforward question for the electrical experts amoungst you....

Ages back I found at dick smith a 12v digital tv tuner, I did the tutorials for cutting into the tv harness under the backseat, and the tutorial for taking off the safety feature of shutting off the tv when the handbrake is released of car is put in gear.

Basically what I got was digital tv with a remote when I pushed the tv button below the emv. I was impressed with both the quality and the sound, although learn quickly digital tv doesn't track whilst moving....doh.

So that's straightforward right here is my question, if I unplug the audio connectors from my tv unit and plug them into my iPhone to listen to music why is the quality soooooo poor???

It is quiet, it is crackling, it is just plain nasty! I am guessing it is an interference thing right? Can someone please tell me how to fix this??

firstly iphone audio quality is use an ipod, preferably an older one(for some reason they seem to work better, im using a 2gb 1st gen nano).

about the crackling, i think check the grounding of the wires themselves.

as ali has said, crackling is usually caused by a poor earth.

maybe the impedance output of the iphone is different to the impedance input of the car amp?

that will give low , poor quality sound.

Use USB to the dock connector (with a head unit that supports the iPhone) for good quality audio from the iPhone. If you do have to resort to the 3.5 jack, then put the phone into Aeroplane mode to reduce interference.

Ok check the earth wire to what though???

It is great quality with everything else just not iPhone and that can't be earthed?

Putting it is aeroplane mode didn't do anything to improve quality.

The 'tv' audio input is a differential input with flat response.

Since most audio units (iPhone etc) simply have a non differential output , then you need to drive the input at a higher input volume level.

You do also need to make sure the correct earthing to each phono plug to soarer audio input loom to ground I.e. The Soarer -R & -L are connected to ground , the +R to right audio phono , and +L to audio phone .

Check your volume is not more than half on your IPhone. I thought I had a poor earth connection (and I'm currently using a tape deck adaptor!) and checked everything I could. Now I use the IPhone with the volume no more than 50% on the IPhone and the volume on my stereo around 85% and it sounds perfect. Anything above 50% volume on most mobile devices will cause crackling and distortion.

Simple, but it worked

Never come across this problem with either my windows mobile phone or my iphone. Of course after the last head unit i've now got a propper bluetooth or ipod cable to play music so that's better than manually controlling the source and using a headphone jack.
