the fault was no +12v to the antenna amp. I spliced the power lead to the amp onto another +12v connection going to the radio. Thks to Luke gomer for identyfing the power lead for me.

the amp is under the roof lining above the rear window. the connector is under the rear seat on the LHS. it is a single connector, red/black wire one side, and black the other.

measure for 12v at the connector. if it is not there. run a wire to 12v on the radio plug as per fitting expanders on the tutorial on this site.
