Depends on clour. I sometimes use 12 white LEDS for the backlight. It also depends on which circuit board you have as the bulb wire spacing differs.

Are the light bulbs/globes for the buttons available from places like JayCar, or Toyota only?

Jaycar etc do stock some bulbs that can be used but not direct replacements. I have a collection of good 2nd hand bulbs from doing LED conversions.

Mark did the buttons around the air-con display for me in that nice blue... Love it! Now I'll have to do the ECT switch and TEMP and VOL buttons...... And the P,D,2,L I guess. Why is it that the hazard button isn't back-lit? Can it be done?

damn you all, :D:D i just did my air cond light to blue LEDS, and now the suggestion is growing on me as well. aparantly RED is better for your eyes at night (dosent ruin your night vision)

I just did a mate's Mercedes dash in red. Totally different setup to soarers so daylight vision is no problem. Looks great at night. The N and R LEDs in the gear indicator are just two LEDs in 5mm holes drilled into the white plastic housing. You have to fiddle a bit with some sort of way to stop the light getting to other places. I use a black Texta on the sides of the LEDs to stop light from there interfering. For anyone thinking of red the backlights for A/C and radio look horrible in red! but buttons are OK.

Neil told me that a red dash can't be done in Soarers? He said the colour won't come through or something. Only possible colours he listed were: Purple Blue Green Lime

Hey Guys I'm new here but the tutes and discussion really helped me out with mine. One thing I couldn't find was the size and how many LED's I would need for various places. If anyone else needs this info I'm putting it up so others can benefit from my experience. Here goes Drivers door: 3x3mm (I used blue) Passenger door: 1x3mm (blue) Gear selector: 1x5mm for each position plus 2 or more 5mm to light up the Letters I used Blue for P and D, Red for R, 2 and L and Green for N. I used two white ones to light up the letters, with 1k resistors. Power Switch: 2x3mm (blue+1k) TRC Switch: 1x3mm (blue+1k) I don't have any other switches/buttons in the centre but it will be either one or two and you will need current limiting resistors. Volume Knob: 2x3mm (blue+1k) Temp Knob: 2x3mm (blue+1k) A/C Unit: The indicator lights are 3mm but I replaced them with 5mm, these fit if you take a little bit off the rim off on each side, 1 each for AC, Recirc, Fresh, Front and Rear. I used Blue for AC, Green for Recirc and Fresh air and Red for the Demisters. You'll need 7x3mm or 5mm to light up the buttons and around 6x3mm or 5mm for the LCD. I used 6 blue 3mm leds facing away from each other under the LCD and got rid of the Diffuser. The distribution of light is really quite even and you can only notice a difference when its pretty sunny. Some other notes. I started by getting LED's from Dick Smith and Jaycar, but at $3 ea I thought it was a bit steep, especially after I accidentally blew a few by shorting them out. I found www.ledsales.com.au and I was totally shocked when they were around 30c ea not $3. Next up I reckon I'll do a Blue Dash conversion.
