well i foolishly forgot to remove the battery terminals when i went for a 2 week holiday.
naturally the battery was dead. jump started it, ran it for 20 mins, but then it wouldnt start again. so jump started it again and this time cat conv light came on for a couple of seconds followed by some damn error code(alt not charging battery im pretty sure) and emv turned off and lights dimmed.
then everything went back to normal and i drove home fine, no loss of power or anything. turned the car off and it wouldnt start again :-(
had a look at the alternator and there is no apparent power steering fluid leak or anything. cat conv werent glowing or anything.
should i bother replacing the battery or just go straight to the alternator? strong dollar means i can get a brand new one from the US for pretty cheap! anyone keen to have a look for me and diagnose this stuff? i need my carrrr :-(

i will do that Monday and see how it goes Dave. i might just buy a new alternator and get ready to recondition the PS anyway, because its bound to happen someday.

Did you check what voltage it was running at when the car was on?

Yeah, I've left my car standing for up to a month with the battery connected and had no problems. Sounds like your battery was on the way out and the two week break was just the nail in the coffin.

bought a 660cca century battery and it started first time. voltage after starting was 14.2/14.3V. everything runs perfect :-)
