My 1991 V8 starts and revs fine but cuts out on idle and engine electrical system warning activates. Does anyone have any ideas?

My 1991 V8 is exactly the same, with a code which appears to be 'Engine check Electrical control system' Do you do this with a jumper between E1 and TE1 or differently? I hav'nt done any of this before so would appreciate any help.

hi,I had exactly the same issue with my v8.

First pull the 30 amp fuse out in the engine bay second from the left ,to clear any previous errors leave out for a minute or two ,put back in.

Get a paper clip, bend it so u have two probes insert into terminal e1 and te1 of diagnostic port 1 the one in the engine bay.
Start car ,you should have some Japanese writing in blue not orange as with error ,also o/d should be flashing ,press scroll ,should come up with either efi ng or efi ok ,if its ng, no good ,wait can take a few minutes, an error code or codes should appear ,write these numbers down and search forum for cause and repair,o yer take the paper clip out.You can also press scroll again to check ect(gearbox) same as efi ,either ng or ok

.
I would be checking your iacv very common fault with these cars .The problem with my car was the ecu when I did diagnostic scan my car wouldnt show codes, just efi ng then efi -- .

While working on the electricals I found the water pump had given up so I am now in the middle of replacing the water pump, timing belt, rotas and caps, plugs and leads. Hope this fixes her up.

I have completed all the repairs now (as above). The car runs well with no misses, the lights all work, I have checked the fuses, and still the 'Check engine Elektr. control system' (in Japanese)keeps appearing and staying on the screen permanently every time I start the car. Can anyone please help me to fix this problem. I still need to fix the steering wheel electrics as the wheel only goes in and out. could this be the problem?

Have u done a diagnostic check on the car yet ,if not I recommend doing it as it should give u an error code to narrow down the problem.

Do a diagnostic check
Could be ecu
Could be knock sensors triggering from noisy shims
Could be crank angle sensor or a cam sensor playing up.

All fall under engine electrical error plus a heap more.
