I recently reset my ECU, put the key in the ignition and the wheel lifts and extends towards the drivers seat like normal. When i went to retract the wheel away a puff of smoke came out behind the steering wheel and the wheel would not retract. The tilt up and down still works perfectly.
So my question is, is it a dead telescopic motor or could it possibly be something else?

ah I deletes that after you did it 3 times, smoke is something burning out ,.....a fuse blows the smoke stops!but in your case you seem to be able to use it again?

Yeah, first time it smoked up it extended towards the driver fine but had difficulties retracting into the dash again. Was slow and would stop as well as smoke coming out. Second time it smoked up and would not retract into dash. Third time no smoke no nothing. So leaves me guessing that the motor burnt itself out?

You may have burnt the motor out by persisting. Turn the tilt mechanism off immediately.
The drive cog has become worn & the motor has been attempting to drive the worn cog. If you are lucky the motor still works & the cog has just done a few teeth.
I had the same issue (although I turned it off immediately, thus no smoke outcome). I fixed mine with a couple of washers mounted behind and in front of the drive gear. This realigns the gear so it can engage again even if it is a little worn. you'll also need to clean up the worn gear with a file. It worked a treat & has been ok ever since.
Try the following tutorials for help. Full credit to the quality of the original posters - Carl, Darryn & c_irie. I hope you haven't burnt the motor out...that's another pain of an issue in itself

Thanks for the Information Mark. I had read these tutorials a little to late. Pretty sure the motor has fried completely as i said, no response. Will grab a second hand one and see how i go from there.

My first guess was the motor too, now I'm thinking it might be the steering column switch or ECU (depends where the smoke came from), although it should be easy to work out what is fried by the burn marks.

Thanks Adam, from what i can tell it seems that from the motor it runs into a relay then into an ECU... I'm thinking maybe the relay has fried.
So looks like to fix it i will have to pull the entire dash apart. as apposed to working around the dash (Removed steering column cover and got the motor out that way)
