Hey guys I have a problem with my 93 Soarer TT. This morning I got in my car to go to work and when I got there I went to turn the ignition off but the key won't go past accessories, as if the gearbox is not in park, I fiddled with the gearstick and the steering wheel to make sure it wasn't that or the steering lock, I then disconnected the battery and was able to take the key out without any hassle, but if I reconnect the battery the key won't go past accessories again, I'm stuck and I just wanted to see of anyone has any ideas before I call an electrician.

The car isn't registering its in park. there are a few tutorials on here on how to clean the little switch / sensor. Common problem really.

Yeah as David said, the car must be in Park to remove the key or turn the car on.

Take the gear lever off, pull down the little plastic thing at the bottom, then pull the top plastic cover off (the bit that says 1-2-D-N-R-P. Just pull it up it pops off.

Take the plugs out so you can see what your doing.
Now just poke around in there I reckon till it works, try jiggle the gear knob whilst trying to turn the car on.

At least you should be able to get the car home. I'm guessing your priority is being able to leave work at this point.

Hey thanks for tutorial link David but I'm not so car savvy so that seems a bit to hard for me to do myself. Alistair I have tried that and made no progress unfortunately, but I can get home it's just a pain disconnecting the battery everytime I need to get the key out... Is this a job for an auto electrician?

I'm having the same issue at the mo. I've just removed the gear knob and am driving it fine like that. The problem I am having is that the button on the gear knob is no longer making contact with the spring loaded button within. So, with the knob removed, I can just push down on that myself lol

Hope this is of some help

Most mechanic's would be able to do it if you print out the link i gave you. Given auto electricians charge through the nose for their time.
