Hi all,

hoping someone here can help me, tried searching but came up with nothing.

anyway, recently when idling and the engine isn't too loud i can hear an electrical humm or buzz under the bonnet somewhere, but when i go to look i can't hear it, i can only hear it in the cabin.. more on this noise: it is a constant buzz but then it changed pitch when i do anything electrical (turn lights on and it sounds like the buzz dies a little) and the indicators make it sound like the buzz pulses when they go on and off..

just this morning ready for work, i tried to turn my car over and it would hardly move the starter motor, could these 2 be related?

i'm not sure how an alternator works but could it be the alternator? the noise and now a flat battery?

"sounds like" you have lost a phase in the alternator and need to replace the rectifier assy.


If you measure the batt voltage with the engine going it will not be ~14v, but the same as when the engine is off.

you can buy the assy for $77 delivered and fit it yourself if that is the problem

i think i will test the system first. test the volts while off and then on and then around 2000rpm

this should give me a clear indication of something that is failing shouldn't it?
