All,recently bought a 97 V8,car had front crank seal leak so friend and I pulled it down replaced crank seal and timing belt as it was covered in oil.when reassembling noted that loom for crank position sensor had a "washer" thing in its length which suggested it should be secured behind something.the only place it would fit was behind a leg of the radiator fan motor to the block. Car is now running , but has a Klingon message on dash which from the dash warning translation means "Engine electrical system" alternating with "TRC" Engine has slight miss at idle, bad miss around 3k to 4k rpm Done diagnostics car has one fault TRC 51 My car does NOT have traction control My question is this - if I have pinched or broken a wire from the crank pos sensor ,would that cause this Klingon and miss to happen? It is a big job to pull it apart again without some idea what to look for. Any help appreciated}

Trc51 can be ecu related I'll have a hunt through some paperwork and see if that's the right ecu in the car. I'd be pulling the leads out and testing them with a multimetre Also coils can do this as well

Daniel, some more info this error has appeared since seal and belt were replaced,nil problems before. I replaced leads with new set at same time. I checked toyodiy and the ecu is correct. coils were removed and replaced as part of process.

check timing. Harmonic balance at TDC and check if disti rotors are pointing to the align marks. If 180" out, pull engine around again to TDC on harmonic balancer and check alignment of rotors. Then double check leads are correct.

Tom,when I set up the cam timing my right side cam pulley had timing mark same as all tutorials,however the left side (double lip pulley) had no marks as such but had two nicks in the underside of pulley,i used the one which best corresponded with the pics in tutorials- I will wind the motor around and get a picture.

john, if you take the disti cover off, you can see the rotor button and the align marks. These are different to the marks used in the tutorial to align the belt, but the result is the same. I have changed 3 timing belts on soarers and followed the tutorial with no dramas. Checking the rotor align will confirm that it is ok or not.

| Tom , have done what you said in previous post and have pics,will double check using dizzy,but already looks one tooth out on left pulley, timing mark is on back of pulley not front and I didn't think to look there as right pulley is marked on front

to change the timing, you need to remove the tensioner and slip the belt to the correct position. sorry i do not think there is any short cut.
