Andrew, what have you been using to control your air con fan and your radio?? And access all those things that John has said? In case you don't know the EMV is a touch screen control as well.

Hey Vincent, I haven't been using anything for the controls as I have only had the car a week and its unregistered at the moment. With being mechanically minded and have an understanding of electronics I was hunting for information on the rebuild or problem as to why.. The other thing I was after was what it actually does and both you and John have answered it.. So Thankyou so much for that. My concerns was to be able to fix the problems with screen and back light if possible. Also to get the display to work properly. So again I am very grateful for the help in which you and John have given..

I suppose one can't be fussy with such location wise. Typical or local repair places can charge a lot to sort these as they do a generic service and don't specialize with such often. One unit I repaired had the screen replaced by an electrical goods repair shop using a wrong sized LED backlight so didn't look good, yet charged the customer $2000 for the job!! Best part was it always stayed on even with the key out of the dash..... I've only been charging $400-500 (varies) for a full service and that includes a 12 month warranty. Touch issues, backlight issues, power issues, the lot.

Are you on commission John?, I have been working on these EMV's for over 20 years, ( along with many other electronic devices, I am full qualified btw) just for my self, I don't pry for business so I won't repair for someone else. There is much more than just Capacitor replacement in these units, yes the caps do fail and cause various issues, and yes Mick from what I have seen does replace ALL the caps, hence this will resolve any faults caused by faulty caps.

Roland, not on commission, not aware that you did these, sent my last ECU to Mike as did not want to deal with self confessed experts. The postage cost to and fro to Mike made the repair expensive but the job was good. Will call you next time

Thanks John, I just help out where I can treating people car parts like I'm dealing with my own car. Seems helpful to the community to share a skill while undercharging for such a service. Roland, I sense a questionable attitude from you, asking John if hes on commission, what is that all about?

i wondered where he is coming from too Mike, in one breath he asks if i am on commission then says he does them and has done for over 20 years, then says he wont repair for anyone else, go figure

Yeah... Besides that, I'd be skeptical if they had issues 20 years ago, as in 1996, they were nearly brand new cars then and few had been imported to NZ or Australia as grey imports, wasn't really until the later 90s early 00s they really started pouring in. For that matter too, It's not like the hardware (caps) were low grade and would have failed in 5 years or so. All the EMV caps are 105 deg rated Nichicon or Panasonic. Best in the game.

Just some more infor, the original caps in most of the EMV's and some other electronic devices were all a batch that were not manufactured to specs and failed at different intervals, some within 3 years of life, as we all know one or 2 caps can fail but the EMV can still function and so can the ECU's but progressively get worse as time goes on ( ie: the parameters change 10uf could become 7 uf , not quite enough to cause a fault as yet) And yes I have been working on the EMV,s for 20 years as I owned a soarer in 1994, and was trying to modify the GPS mapping as well as tapping into the harness for sampling other diagnostics, I have over 6 full EMV's and 5 piggyback computers for them as well as 3 ECu's all of which I have working and as spares. Please do not question my prior post I do not lie , I am here to help other soarer owners out and not to make money from my help. As i also said its not just caps that have caused the problems in the EMV's and the ECU's. Mick and others the commission statement was a joke so please ease up and see the funny side.
