I rebuilt my alternator. Took it off the car and took it to a auto elec. Was quoted $150-250 depending on issue. Mine is the older round plug, which is harder to find. Usually you have to buy an adaptor for $30 extra to make it work. If you rebuild you won't have this issue with the plug.

Scott, Tom, thanks for the quick responses, my local auto electrician is going to rebuild it for $299. He thinks, from experience, it will be just as good as new given the quality of original Toyota unit even though nearly 25yrs old

Shop around a little if you have the time. Mine needed the works. He called me once the unit was open and consulted me before commencing any work. Had he told me $300+ I may have gone a new eBay unit.

Just asking out there if someone has an alternator cover/protector, home made laying around. My power steering just starting to leak but not bad to repair just yet. Concerned if left to long will bugger my alternator
