Hi guys,

I've got an issue with my headlamps not working (both sides), hoping someone can point out something I’ve missed.

I recently took the engine out and put it back in, as far as I can tell so far - everything else is working.

Firstly, all other lights work - parkers, indicators, rear lights, interior and door courtesy lights, shifter panel, climate control, instrument cluster, the dimmer switch also works.

I’ve tested/swapped integration relay, headlamp relay, headlights, fuses and engine bay grounding points.

What I’ve noticed is that at the headlamp connectors, there is positive power but no ground - I determined this by using a test light from the connector directly to the battery:
Positive side of connector to negative battery terminal – the test light works.
Negative side of connector to positive battery terminal - the test light doesn’t work.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards,
Matchy.

Here’s a breakdown of what I’ve done.

  • I’ve tested all the ground points with a test light, against the positive battery terminal and they all light up.
  • I’ve switched the integration relay with another one of the same model number.
  • I’ve switched and tested the headlamp relays, by supplying battery power to the small blades – it clicks. And ran a continuity test on the big blades, which show continuity.
  • I’ve swapped both headlamp fuses.
  • I’ve swapped HIDs, and even tried normal bulbs, all of which I’ve tested by supplying battery power directly – all functioning as expected.

One thing thing i forgot to mention is that I tested where the headlamp relay plugs into the fuse box with the test light, only the positive side lights up, not the negative.

Thanks for that Justin, that helped a lot in the problem solving. You are correct in saying that the LO beams switch on earth.

I've just tested all the components from the Headlamp Relay through to the light bulbs and I am pretty certain my issue is on the earth side of the bulb connectors. Rather than tearing the loom apart to see where the issue is. I found it easier for me to just add a couple extra grounding cables directly to the HID ballast. So the lights work now!

Just had a thought, have you checked your drivers side body harness that runs under the front guard ? it could be scrubbed out from your wheel and the connection broken.

Yeah I have actually, there was only one cable that was partially rubbed, Red with yellow strip, whereas the ones going from the lights to the cowel are White with Black stripe, I repaired that and made no difference.
