Hi guys,

I've had a look over some old posts and tried to search but my browser doesn't seem to like me searching the forum.

I recently purchased a '91 JZZ30 non VVTI auto. On the long drive home at night I noticed that my headlights would dim as I used my indicator/blinkers. I have also noticed that my heater blower is hesitant under 900rpm and will dramatically increase when revs are above this.

I charged the battery that was in the car with no luck. I contacted the previous owner who told me the car had sat a while and the battery needed charged. I decided to upgrade the battery to a Bosch S4028 to see if that was the issue but again, no luck.

The previous owner had also told me 2 garages checked the alternator. 1 said it was no good and the other recorded a 14.1v output. Unfortunately he didn't give any reference if this was at idle or under full load etc.

I have also stumbled across the aftermarket alarm post regarding a power drain which I think may be linked into my issue but again would this cause the dimming headlights and hesitant blower motor?

Only just this weekend have i noticed the word 'CHARGE' pop up on my dash however no catalytic light that other people have reported. The light does come on with ignition so I know there's a bulb there.

Am I right in thinking the alternator is potentially on it's way out? I've bought a recon unit along with some earthing/ground wire that I plan on fitting. I'm in the process of having an auto spark look over the car.

Sorry to be one of those guys posting one of those posts but I thought I'd ask to see if anyone had the same symptoms.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

trace the neg lead from the battery to where it is grounded on the chassis. remove the bolt and clean the chassis and connector with emery paper to ensure you have a good earth.

Thanks for the reply. I've ordered new terminals and earths so I'll clean up the chassis and fit the new stuff and report back.

So I got a new alternator and also managed to clean the negative earthing point and added a new earth strap for good measure however I’m still experiencing the same issues with dimming headlights during turn signal use and also hesitant blower under a certain RPM.

Can anyone please help me lol

Had the auto spark out today and Volts drop to roughly 11 when I have dipped beam, high beam, heater blower, rear window demister and also indicators on. So pretty much a full load.

He suspects that the alternator isn't turning quick enough to create the required voltage however my warm idle is 700RPM which, from what I've read, is normal.

I forgot to ask him but could it be that there's a draw elsewhere we're not seeing?

If you still have the old alternator just check that the pulley size is the same as the new one that was installed. I assume the new alternator had the correct power rating as original?

I’ll double check pulley size tomorrow. Yeah as far as I know it’s a 100A alternator from a GS300 (easier to source in the UK)

Pulley size was the same. I'm now considering a High Output alternator but I still have it that there's an electrical gremlin elsewhere that I'm missing.

Does anyone have a PDF of all JZZ30 ground locations to make sure I've got them all?

Thanks

Above 2000RPM there is no issue with rear lights but the fronts still flicker ever so slightly. I've messaged the seller of the re manufactured alternator to confirm the output to see if it's just not up to the job.
