sake guys i thought the problem was fixed
car completely died, couldnt put hazards on or anything, had to get the piece of towed home, for like 1 second the cat converter light came on... i got it started once, idling at 200rpm with no power steering, and just as it died going into the servo it made a real loud noise like something hitting a fan then it died....got towed home, now the car starts but idles all screwy again and the petrol gauge...
ive checked the earthing points and they seem ok, undid them and re did them...... could it be my battery? alternator?

Ryan, still sounds like a battery or battery connection issue to me. If the alternator went funky, the battery would still carry the show for a fair while. That nothing worked, indicates you couldn't get power out of the battery for whatever reason.
When the engine was off, then the alternator wasn't a factor at that time, yet still nothing worked.

Digging up an old thread. Had anyone got this issue resolved with the flashing fuel level light & then it coming up as empty.
Last night, I filled up a jerry can of 20 litres of Caltex Vortex 98 with 2 bottle of Techron 5000 injector cleaner. Took the car for a drive, then the flashing fuel level light came on and it acted like it was empty.

I've found in the v8 if I put ethanol in it the gauge goes funny. If I put petrol into it the gauge fixes itself. Don't know if the TT is the same as a jzx but assume they are (float type). I run e85 in the jzx and the fuel sender remains accurate. Suggest giving it a clean or pulling one of a wreck and swapping it.

If you think that's the issue just fill it with 98 and should fix it. I've filled with e85 even 5 litres will mess it up. But then just fill with 98 and it should fix it unless it's another issue.

Update.
So today, I drove the the car for about 25km (including on Parramatta Rd). For those that don't know Sydney, Parramatta Rd is one of the worst, bumpiest roads in Sydney. The fuel gauge began doing funny things. It would show 'full', then 'half tank', then '3/4 tank', then 'empty' and would randomly go between any amount for about 5 minutes.
Eventually, it leveled out to a consistent amount of fuel. Thank goodness for that!
My guess is that the Techron 5000 must've loosened some gunk inside the tank and attached itself to the sender. The bumpy roads has then shaken the gunk off. I could be totally wrong, but she's all good now and that's what matters.

More than likely you have the capacitive sender and not the float type (do you have the scroll button on the dash ?). These senders seems to gunk up sometimes and can give false readings. There is a thread somewhere on how to clean them and you can't use E85 with the capacitive sender as it won't give you an accurate reading.
