Hey Drew
You can check out this website. This company is based in the states and can retrofit BMW and Audi HID systems to your car, seems to me. You get that blue aura while retaining a stock look and proper cutoffs and light patterns.
This website also does a good job explaining HID technology and how some companies "cheat" to get that blue look. It's a long read, but if you scroll to the middle you will find some pictures that illustrate the technology quite well.http://www.intellexual.net/hid.html

Try to avoid going with higher intensity HID's if you can. If you quickly read over Intellexual.net you will see that the higher ratings will result in a blurred and controlled light emission!
Any colours "colder" than white also puts strain on your eyes! Worth remembering =P
Not only that, but headlight housings that aren't designed for HIDs will also emit too much glare and many don't have a good cut off line. HID retrofit would be nice in a Soarer though, should've had them from the factory.

I've also considered putting HID in my foglights to use them as a sort of second highbeam, I think it would be good for drives in rural area, ie. driving through the hills in the wee hours. Combined with highbeam you would get some pretty good illumination, because sometimes I find highbeam just doesn't cut it. And then I can turn them off and use normal lights without having to worry about police when I'm back in the city.
