Just today I was pulled over by some policeman that obviously needed to get in his quota and now I have to remove these lights because they are not "self adjusting and self cleaning" as all HID lights are apparently meant to be. Australia has some stupid car laws...

Hi Dave. Yes as Peter said all legal HIDs must be self cleaning and self leveling as they are in factory cars ie Honda Accord Euro.
If a car satisfys the above criteria, it will give off that sparkle as it goes over a bump/dip in the road that you may notice. Sort of like a blue to purple to blue twinkle, this is the self leveler working. So our cars with HIDs will never have this effect. But I tell you I still get blinded by the Accords and 300c's mainly.
The higher the kelvin the more likely you are to get pulled over because they have more of a blue look. When I had 6000k HIDs in the black soarer and went through a boozebus, the cop said your lights are awfully bright, and I said, "Yeah these bloody new Lexus'" That seemed to work.

this is why Honda accords dont blind you....
The Accord Euro quite possibly has the worst headlight alignment I've ever seen. They are all set far too high and I can easily spot a Euro in a pack of any number of HID equipped cars. I actually think Honda have manufacturing issues in regard to headlight alignment.

Sorry mate, it's not the auto leveler that's doing that, it's the HID projector itself (so a combination of the projector bowl, cut off shield and the lense as well).

I have accord euro headlights at home. i cant see how the self level, they are simply bolted onto the bracket inside the headlight. No leveling mechanism in there. I've seen a few of the mechanism's having driven many high end euro cars, new M3's rs4's DB9's etc. They all do a cool trick when you start them, they sort of swivel up and down. Accords have nothing.

The new Toyota Aurions that have HID's let you see around the corner, they move with the steering, pretty good! My HID's look like normal lights from far away but a bit more of a white colour, not so noticeable, hav'nt been pulled over yet.
