Does anyone have any experience or opinions on the value of the after market clear coat protection treatments being sold by some new car dealers?

Very helpful Dave, many thanks. They have a few package options, but I was thinking it sounded like a way to cash in on the hype and excitement of buying a new car. The window tinting part of the package is also very expensive compared to what is available elsewhere. Are there any recommendations as to good products that can be applied to help protect the interior and exterior?

The vinyl protection is not to bad but drys to a shine , spoils the look a bit!.... Scotch guard the seats yourself if they are cloth? The defence packs are done at the tint shop so maybe a bit of arm twisting..DR

I had a mildly amusing incident at a Holden dealer several years ago that led me to believe they were worthless. (paint protection that is...) I wanted to trade my two year old Holden (purchased from same dealer) in on a new Holden. After being given a disappointing trade value for the old car I explained that they must of forgotten about the expensive paint protection, interior treatments, and underbody protection they sold me two years ago. The salesman replied that it was not worth any extra value and was purely for 'peace of mind'. He then offered me the same "value adding protection pack" on the new car. I politely declined and went to Subaru...

Yep, some sales people shouldn't be in the job. My wife has been looking for a "near new" Yaris for a few weeks, but the right combination of colour, auto and 1.5 litre engine hasn't yet come up. Mid Friday afternoon, I wondered how a new one would compare in price and availability. It turns out the cost difference isn't all that big, not being an expensive car, they don't drop $5,000 when you take them out the door. First place I rang was Cornes Toyota as it's the closest to me, and the attitude was very good so I dropped in to get a feel for the place and discuss prices. Despite being busy with a lot of people in the showroom that had all turned up around the same time, I was taken seriously, treated well, and offered a good and straightforward deal. I then rang and visited CMI Toyota city and Jarvis Toyota where they really couldn't care. It was late Friday afternoon, but that shouldn't matter. I then rang Cornes back again, and 3 people stayed back after 6:00pm so I could get back there and do the deal. Despite a problem getting the car from their storage yard, they had it ready at 5:30pm Monday as promised and again stayed back to do the paperwork, show us the car and controls, do the final check over, etc. So for a bit of good attitude, Cornes Toyota got what I would consider to be a quick and easy sale. I know a Yaris won't make or break a dealership, but over the medium term, word of mouth, loyalty and other factors will bring in more business. It seems so simple really.

The Yaris is a surprisingly good little car. My sister's got a YRS-spec hatch (1.5 manual), very well laid out, with good amount of room and (when driven correctly) has enough power for driving around the 'burbs.

We have talked with a few owners, they all love them. Another recommendation was from a security driver that uses one to patrol the state's water reservoirs etc. It's done 140,000 k's in 12 months without a hitch and while it's only the 1.3, he says just keep the revs up a bit and it will go anywhere quite happily. I don't think I will be trading in my Soarer though.

Prius is too expensive to make any sort of financial benefit (especially short term). If they were cheaper then possibly the above equation is true ahaha.

Why? Extra govt import taxes, so that Holden and Ford can sell their locally made junk Having said that, at least few thousand aussies have a job... at our expense though. Back on topic, I was quite impressed with the Yaris when I test drove it some time ago. Wouldn't choose another econobox over it.

Wow that sucks. I looked up the exchange rate, and the US dollar is worth about 88 Aussie cents, which is pretty close. It doesn't make sense that they charge out the ass for anything not Holden or Ford. What crap!

Put it this way, prices don't change, they are just reaping benefits out of the foereign exchange gains... |

Brian, Dunno if we're on the same wavelength, however I'm talking about cars that aren't manufactured here... i.e. every Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi etc. all fall under import car tax levies. So not cars that are private imports, but everything else that doesn't have a "Holden Commodore/Monaro" or "Ford Falcon" badge... sucks BIG time.

The other big cost is the Australian Standards work spread over such a small number of units sold.
