My car definately drives HEAPS better with factory standard 50mm offset wheels. Unfortunately you will never get a deep dish in a 50mm wheel. 45mm offset is OK if you can find someone to do a decent wheel alignment taking into account the wrong offset which will mean you DO NOT use factory wheel alignment settings. For me I'll stick with the 50mm offset and factory wheel alignment.
Yeah, you gotta sacrifice a little (e.g. the car tramlining more etc) to have wheels with lower offsets, but whatever floats your boat For me I don't mind it too much (I had more trouble with speed humps then I ever did with tramlining ).

The skirts and lip were on the car when I bought it. the skirts look like 97 model ones, ( see vehicle at www.northshoreprestige.com.au), but the lip is from the older models.

Exactly. Thet will fit and can be made to behave with a decent wheel alignment (read 'expensive'). You will need to find someone who can work out what settings need to be changed to get it to drive correctly...not easy.
Or it could just be fine without any need to change the wheel alignment.
I had 45 offset 17" wheels when i got my Soarer (close to ideal), and changing to 32 offset 18" wheels made absolutely no difference to the handling from what i could tell. Maybe if i took my car to a race track and competed for best times etc it would make a difference, but for regular driving the only difference is that my 18" chromies got more R.E.S.T.E.K.P.!

My experience was the opposite to most of the posts here. My Soarer was imported with a set of 16" Enkei wheels, 16x7 on the front and 16x8 on the rear, with a 35 offset. The compliancing guys put on a cheap set of Nankang tyres and it sat on the road beautifully.
I decided to go for 17" and bought a second-hand set of Lexus GS300 wheels, 17x8 with a 50 offset, and after a bit of research went for the Kumho ASX (nearly Pirelli's), 17x235 all round. Three wheel alignments later (the last at Pedders) and the tramlining is now not too bad, but enough that I need to keep a firm grip on the wheel when braking.
