So, what would it take (other than sourcing a new sunroof) to fit a sunroof to a 91 JZZ30 that came out stock with full hardtop? Does the Soarer option sunroof fully open or is it one of those "open at the back only" sunroofs? Or has anyone ever seen a convertable conversion?

Factory sunroof is two-way tilt/slide.

I want one too... I still miss mine from my old Soarer :-(

Would be a major mission to fit a factory sunroof, even if you could source all the parts. Probably easier just to find another Soarer with one already fitted.

Seems the best way to do it is to replace the entire roof with one that has a factory sunroof. *Simply* cut along the factory weld lines. There are a few aftermarket sunroofs installed in soarers, and the owners have selected how far forward/back they want them which you may find appealing. I've always wanted to see a soarer with a moonroof installed, mind you I hate sunroofs as they reduce head room which is important for me.

Hey Russell,
This might be an option.
My soarer has a "webasto" aftermarket job which is great.
It tilts and retracts outside the roof which means no compromising of headroom.
At 6'3 I cant comfortably ride in a soarer with a factory sunroof.)
Also it automatically retracts after shutdown and fit and finish is superb.
Couldn't tell you what their worth,it was installed before i purchased car.

Problem with any sunroof also is maintenance.

It's a commonly overlooked part of servicing and maintenance, and often left off the records, so always goes as a "service that part next time".

The Sunroof needs it's rails cleaned and dry-lubed every 6 months, and the rubber seal moistened (with rubber conditioner) every 3 - 6 months depending on climate.

I moisten my rubber seals every 3 months (doesn't hurt them), and clean and dry-lube the rails and moving parts every 6 months, it's a pr1ck of a job, but keeps the sunroof operating smooth and happy.

I know Mike from Tamborine up here in QLD has an aftermarket one, but im pretty confident his was installed before he bought the car.

My mate got one installed in his Honda and they pretty much just cut a hole in the roof and slotted one in there. Mind you - his is not electronic.

Dont know of any places in QLD but in Vic theres quite a few sunroof places that will install aftermarket sunroofs like the original ($2.2k) or sunroofs which slide back over the roof ($1.4k). Both are fully electric, tilt-n-slide etc

http://www.prestigesunroofs.com.au/

Non-electric would probably only cost $800, but i wouldn't recommend one of these.

A convertible conversion has been done before, but budget at least $20k+ to get something that might remotely pass engineering/ADR requirements.

That would be a massive job! Much easier just to get an aftermarket one installed where they just cut a hole in the roof.

I have an aftermarket one on my soarer from the previous owner. It was done in 2001 and the previous owner reckons it cost him over $4k for water proofing and the works. Will post some pics for ya tonight.

So true...

Looks great! I wish my headliner was that clean. When she gets out the shop I'm lowering her, changing the head liner, getting new carpet, and going to look for new 19" chromies!!
