I just had to do mine too. The handle died last night.
Put the plastic clip in the hole first, then slip the end of the rod into the hole at the end of the plastic clip and fold the clip down so the base of it snaps around the rod. Otherwise you'll push till either your thumb explodes or you stuff up a new clip.
I bought 2 clips just in case. Plus, it'll be good to have a spare on hand if it happens again.

you legend Sam, can't believe i didn't think of that and it made all the difference. thanks so much, this should be noted to everybody that has this problem because from all the threads i read, it didn't mention or occur to me that you were meant to put the clip in first.

and my thumbs do thank you very much as they were already on the verge of exploding from trying to push them in so much.

I'm joining the club. :-(

Went to open door last night and it wouldn't work, handle just goes up with no resistance. I hadn't read this thread yet, wound down the window today to talk to a work mate and clunk, oh-oh....

You could be ok Luke, I did the same a while back and the rod was fine, just a little bent. Good luck with it.
