I am looking at bringing a bit of colour to my engine bay.

Was after peoples experiences in which type of paint to use, which to avoid etc..

I have some enamel paint and am hoping this will be ok in the heat of the engine bay.

Make sure you wash the parts thoroughly, sand them with a fine wet and dry. Wipe down with prepsolv wax and grease remover, then spray a coat of plastic primer sand lightly and spray a couple of coats of Acrylic Lacquer on top. Sand with 1200 wet & dry then a coat of clear.

I have already primed the parts for painting and are ready to go.

So this 'Acrylic Lacquer' is better than the normal enamel paint?

Any recommended brands?
Is the clear coat to protect the finish or just give gloss look?

Protection and the ability to polish and wx protect it also, without damaging the actual paint :-)

Get a spray can of * Plastic Prep * ( Supacheap sell it )
It goes on BEFORE any other paint.

This will make the paint stick and last for YEARS.
( Prepsol prior to this )

Also, even though the Gloss Paint has clear in it..Spray a clear coat over the finished job as well.

if you have access to a spray gun, protec acrylic laquer i have found is by far the best paint i have used. i sprayed my friend's front bumper with the nissan R33 factory silver, and you wouldn't know the difference from the new one we sprayed to the 10 year old paint on the car. for an engine bay, with the thinners, you will probably only need 500ml as (don't quote me though) is done as a 1 to 1 ratio. so 1 litre will cover approximately 2 sq metres with 2 coats, and clear, probably only 1 coat will do.

once you have sprayed the colour use 1200 wet and dry to remove any small imperfections and then wipe wax and grease remover over the painted surfaces and then cover it with the clear.

let that sit for 2 days to really harden, and once that is done, use the miguires cut and polish series, (in cream coloured bottles) there is 4 in the series, you won't need the corse cut, only the last two, the medium cut cleaner and the fine cut cleaner to finish it up. then if you want to go really far, clay bar it with the miguires clay bar kit which comes with the clay bar and spray detailer. it will remove any minor imperfections in the paint. then just wax it. should come up a treat.
