Hi Guys,
I have sun fade paint problems on the top of the front bumper bar and on the rear spoiler that look really ugly and a full paint job is about 6k. So In the intrim before a new paint job I thought I could paint it my self if the paint is available in a spray can. I know there paint sticks on ebay usa but they are useful for scratches only.
cheers

My local paint store can match any existing colour and make it into an aerosol can.

You give them something like the petrol flap and they will colour match to it. First can is like $45 and the next ones are cheaper.

Hi Matt,
I see that you are listed for Newe Zealand
I am very interested if there are any places in Ostralia.
Is your local store part of a chain etc. If you are unable to tell me I'll start searching here anyway if anyone else knows- I'm keen to know.
cheers

They aren't a chain but do sell major paint brands etc.

I would just start calling some local suppliers, you might be suprised.

Matt.

just a question michael, have you sprayed acrylic before? from my experience the spray cans themselves are rather bad and tend to release globs of paint everywhere. secondly there is no clear coat over what you spray so i think you need to spray clear coat acrylic over the top. my understanding is that to get a good finish you need to buff well additionally. still the finish has the orange peel finish typical of acrylic paints. Im not trying to shoot you down, i was wondering if you know something i dont. ive tried this on cars in the past and the result was pretty crap. how big are the areas you're respraying. would be very keen to see the result as my car has lots of points that need retouching.

That depends on the brands of can you buy. Some of the cheaper ones splat paint about the place whilst some other ones atomise it nearly as good as a gun does. Also from my experience, arcrylic causes LESS orange peel than 2pk does.

As for the clear coat, that is always required over metallic or pearlescent paints. Blocking back and buffing is a given regardless of what paint you use.

Any of the autobarns down south able to Black Jade Metallic (6K4)? My autobarn up here is too tight to buy the required tints. Fags.

I wonder if an autobarn down south would post the cans up here. Scrap that. "Dad, go to autobarn, get me three cans and post it up to Darwin. Just label it as peanuts." :-)

orange peel is cause by the operator not the paint,a good painter doesnt need to block out and buff.

I would get some 2pak mixed up and spray it myself with a spray gun...but that's just me (I come from a car spray painting family business where I'd see home jobs gone bad for us to fix up - esp spray can quick fixes). I don't think autobarn would post the spray cans...australia post doesn't allow the postage of aerosols. I'm sure YouTube would have an instructional video on spray painting...a spray gun is a handy thing to have but just be careful with environmental issues if you aren't using a booth etc.

Aerosol cans are fine and can give a good finnish IF you do it right and IF you get good (not just decent) quality paint.

I used to run a wholesale business that imported German Spray Paint (Brand was "Belton", which under that they made "Molotow" which is a satin finnish and THE best and easiest paint I've ever used, "RAL" stock colours and "Multona" which is the automotive paints).

Multona is made to match vehicle manufacturers paint codes (mostly european, but alot of asian and a few yank manufacturers). Off memory there is a big contingent of Toyota colours.

You won't find them in bunnings and such, a couple of Mitre 10's such as "Crockers", try skate stores, record stores "Butterbeats" anywhere that caters to writers.

I'm not condoning grafitti, but the guys that have the money and the talent (especially if they do council murals and such) will use the Belton paints, because they are superior. There are other brands that are around the same quality, but for automotive paint, go the Multona.

I painted up a Slant Six motor (including all/most accessories) for a car show we had a stall in, in Metallic paint (including their high temp paints for the manifolds) and it was simple, gave a fantastic finnish when the clear coat was applied, and low fuss. As long as you mask and protect against overspray you should be right.

If you are interseted I'll give my old work a ring and see where the closest store to you that would have them is.

Well that's my 10 cents worth.

Yeah mate. There is only one shop in Perth that stocks them (well used to be... it belongs to the wholesale company).

The name is "Montys"

http://www.whereis.com/WA/Victoria-Park/627-Albany-Hwy/#session=MTA=

They are at 627 Albany Hwy in Vic Park two doors down from Cheers Pub which is across the road from where Alberts and Tinta Car is/used to be.

(08) 9355 1779

Give them a ring first (well, it's well worth having a look at the shop anyway) and give them your paint code. They will have a book with the conversion to the Multona product number.

If you have no joy, let me know and I'll give me mate a ring (owns the shop plus wholesale business). Sometimes they have extra stock in the wharehouse that isn't in the store.

Also for any others out there, if you want any that they are out of stock with, make a list, or forum heading and of what everyone wants (including how many cans) and they should be able to order the required colours in.

Be aware though that the paint is shipped from Germany in sea containers so if you want out of stock colours, depending on when their last container has been received, it may be 6 - 12 months before it has landed in Ozzie.

Off memory, they were between 15 - 18 bucks per can. 1 can of the Multona would roughly cover a soarer front bumper 2 to 3 times.

Though for those out there that do not need the manufacturers colours, the Molotow is the best to use. Would cover same bumper 3 to 4 times, and can get a high gloss finish by using the Hich gloss clear coat.

IMO it will, but.... here is the big but. My opinion doesn't really count for sh*t as it will be your opinion that will matter (being on your car).

My suggestion would be to go into the store, have a look and talk to the people in there and ask if you can get Mike's number.
Then 2 things from there:

1). Pick a colour in the same brand of paint that you may need for something else around home or your car colour, if you're willing to take the punt, and test it on a flat and a curved panel (peice of fibre glass, steel plate, etc) and test it.

2). Speak to Mike (if they won't give you his number, let me know and I'll ask him to get in touch with you). He has had A LOT of experience with the brands and painting car components, having resto'd old Vals in the past (and is doing another 2 or 3 projects currently), He will be able to tell you any pitfalls, quality, tips, etc.

One more thing, if you go ahead, make sure you ask for the "Plastic and Vinyl Primer". I'm 80% sure you woun't need it, but to be safe. It is normally for very flexible materials (such as vinyl) and will adhere to the Fiberclass/plastic without cracking under severe flexing.

Adam , if you give auto one the code and let them mix it , you will get a perfect match ...i buy 1 or 2 a month for the car yard.....the pearl ones are the hardest to match.

The place I got to recommends that you mix up at least 1L of paint when getting one-off cans made.
That way they'll be closer to the right colour.

Considering this is revived.
Colour code 6m2 was mixed in 1lt or 1kg spray can for $40.00. AND it was an exact match.
I got them to pour a bit into a small container before pressurising the can for fine touch ups with fine brush and all went effing fantastic.
And would have been perfect if a professional had done it. 1lt-1kg did the front bar and not much more.
NB They did not have right tiny cans for touch up and used a chinese take away can - way too big and dries out too fast. So take your own tiny can and filled up it will last years.
