Currently I have a backlog of... many... cars that need painting. And first, they need stripping. I phoned a few soda blasters and they are charging about $1600 per car. Multiply that by the number of cars I need stripped and that's a fair chunk of change. I am halfway considering buying a soda blaster myself. I do not want to become a blaster, but I am debating the idea that I may be able to pay it off by renting it out to people like myself. It appears that it takes a day to strip a car with it, and it's very quick to learn. It is non toxic, washes away (water soluble) and leaves no crap in the seams of your car like sand blasting. It also doesn't harm metal, rubber or glass. I am proposing a daily rental charge of about $600, and soda would probably run another $200 max. Would anyone seriously consider using a service like this? I am not out to make money, I just want to pay the thing off after a couple of years (they cost well upward of 50 grand).

You might be better off just buying it and using it on your cars and selling it for a few grand cheaper than you paid for it.

You might want to also factor in the price of a large booth to do it in Miles. I got my car interior soda blasted, and the amount of dust that process creates is incredible.

Andrew, I've seen people do it outside. The dust is not harmful and it simply washes away with water. David, The second hand market is minimal and it's something I would want to keep as I go through a lot of cars...

$50k?!? Holy $hit I didn't think they were that much, gues that kind of rules out us getting one at the workshop then Soda blasting is gold though, you can take of individual layers of paint if you feel so inclined! I'd bring a car or 3 over to you if you go it.

Isn't the paint that the blasting takes off harmful though?

It doesn't wash away with water. You sweep it up and stick it in the bin.

I have purchased a soda blaster. Will post some details of cost etc for services/rental as soon as I figure it all out. Rest assured it will be cheaper than having it done anywhere else.. which turns out to be over 2 grand for a car inside and out. It is much better than any other process I have seen - sanding, sand blast, bead blast, dip, chemical stripper etc. You have to see it do the job to believe how good it is.

IF there is any second hand market at all, perhaps buy it second hand use it for your cars and sell it again for a similar price. Even if you hold onto it for a while, you can keep it advertised while renting it out? Edit: I should probably read the entire thread before posting.. |

definitely post this up on some other forums mate, probably have streams of people knocking on your door BUT i'd be weary about how much information you give them as depending on the size of the machine (never seen one) someone might knock it off

Hey Miles, Soda Blasting was a big thing at the SEMA show this year! Please send me more information regarding your blaster - I was about to buy one myself, but the cost is very prohibitive to do a few cars. I may be interested in renting it from you as I've got a few cars that need restoration!

Yeah I've got six cars to do myself, so it should save me 12-15 grand (minus running costs) in what I would have paid someone else.. and that's not even going to come close to paying the compressor off I'll publish some details when I've got the whole rig assembled and had a crack at a couple cars. I'm pretty confident that a car can be done inside and out in a single day. How was SEMA? I wanted to go.. the soda people all told me they were doing demos there. After seeing it I really believe it's the best choice for stripping my cars. Sand and beads suck because they alter the metal - particularly on the nice sharp lines my old cars have along the fenders and quarters. Soda was given a bad rap by an idiot in the paint mfr game about 5 years ago. This fool thought he could blast the car then just shoot primer on it, and wondered why the primer came off. There was a bunch of sh1t going around that soda altered the metal or something. In fact you just have to wash the residue off with a mildly acidic solution. I don't know any other media or process you don't have to clean the metal afterwards?!

The soda used is ordinary bicarb of soda, chemically, if not physically (different crystal size) the same as kitchen baking soda. The process was designed with lack of impact on the environment in mind, and I'd agree with Miles that it could easily be washed away (after neutralising with a weak acid like acetic acid (vinegar)) would be fine, as long as there are no nasties in the stuff coming off the object being sprayed. I would imagine alkaline powder could damage plants though, especially acid-lovers.

Sema was good - but very down from 2007. About 35% smaller than 2007 which is a sign of the times. In 07, the new mustang was all the rage, this year it was the camaro with a lot of examples - at least 250 cars in various stages of modification. Met Chip Foose again and he is doing well - very overworked with all the product launches and publicity. He has new SATA spray guns designed and made in his name - they look pretty swish with an orange anodize and cost about $50 more than the base model. The soda blaster guys were really pumping their product up. The demo was pretty good - small items in a closed case for obvious reasons, but none the less the way it stripped paint was amazing. No heat, sfa work, just let the machine do the job! There are a few guys now offering soda blasting in Victoria from $600-1500 per car. I was considering it but once again, its an expensive process and they may not be as detailed or meticulous. The best thing about the soda blaster in my opinion would be the ability to blast over factory seam sealer without removing it all, and it would be less dangerous than sand, walnut or garnet as the soda is softer and will not ricochet as much. Please send me some information on your soda blaster and setup - I am doing a restoration on a few cars, namely a vintage BMW that I would like to strip back for a bare metal respray. I was thinking of using paint stripper from the body shop, but I really CBF with the mess it makes!

Will do. Stay away from paint stripper.. it makes an awful mess of paint and an even worse mess of filler. Plus by the time you figure up the cost of all the stripper or sand paper, masks, gloves, and chemicals to clean afterwards etc, I'm usually up to a few hundred bucks to strip a car the old way. More if I burn out a sander with all the dust it sucks up. You can tape the seams and soda blast the exterior only. There are guys around who will do a decent job of that for about a grand. $600 I wouldn't go near.. the materials and running costs alone should be about that. I'd be worried they are using other media that can be recycled.
