Ben Lipman wrote on Sunday, April 19, 2009 - 09:16 am:

The area around the front wiper is interesting, and contradicts what many, including me, expected. I thought this area would be low pressure, hence why people remove the rear rubber strip, and cut vents in this area chasing underbonnet cooling.

Keep in mind, that all this shows, is that it is a high pressure area relative to the area around it. The pressure under the bonnet may still be higher meaning that hot air would still flow out.

It really needs a for the pressure difference to be tested.

Your right Peter, good point.
I'm looking at magnehelic gauges now, that will be able to tell us what's happening, and where best to place vents etc.
Oh and I did a quick estimate of Cda:

191,000 Watts

0.6 x 2.4165Sqm x (74.715m/s^3)

Joe, if you do another test, see what difference (if any) it makes with the air vents on fresh or recirc.

Very cool, id love to test stock and vertex front and rear bumpers, to see if the vertex actually scooped more air.

In m opinion, they are better tahn vortex generators, and subaru not use them stock instead, while evos are using vortex. Use both maybe, as vortex can be had for under $100

Yea that first one is dumb. 2nd may work, not as well as a full rear wing though, and wouldn't do what vortex generators do id say.
Would be great to test!

Dont know to much about this subject, but i felt the rear lip was acting like a scoop after the air had passed over the spare wheel housing, so i fitted this .
I always thought it should be high pressure around heater /air intakes ?(wiper area),keep up the good work Joe.

Dave how did you affix the panel? It looks like rivets to the wheel well if I'm correct.
I'm thinking of taking out the rubber grommets and using wire ties to hold a panel for testing, likely aluminium.
Yes the area is an intake for vents etc, and yet many people remove the rear rubber strip to lower engine bay temps.
This may work as more air is forced into the rear of the engine bay and down under the car, not by hot air rising out as commonly thought... maybe.

Joe it is a piece of stainless ,just cut to fit round the rear lip supports and pushed up then pop riveted to bottom of s/wheel well , i swear its somehow made the car quieter at high speed.

I saw a little diy article in auto salon magazine about cutting the rear bar, which is what i have done. I plan on making a diffuser type thing like what you've done too dave.

Reducing the high pressure air underneath, probably a bit more stable and quieter at high speed?

Update!(Please excuse the crap photos-new photographer)
I tried out a prototype under tray today.
Here is a picture of the rear without:

With:

And...it looks like it did stuff all.
The one tuft under the exhaust does show good flow and separation though, I have another picture confirming this.
I did notice a couple of things-first off, it was really quiet! Very little road noise, even less than before. And another thing which was amazing-my height controller was saying the rear was lower than usual, meaning the car was experiencing less upforce, or more downforce. But the best part of this is I had taken out my spare to fit the tray, and left it out for the run.
This means that even with 15kg less weight in the boot the suspension was further down than usual-I'd call that a very good outcome.
Need to put tufts on the actual tray, at the lowest point.

Next up are the mudflaps.
Front with:

Without:

The flow reattached much quicker, that's good! Still turbulent though. Need to put more wool tufts on the black strip to see whats happening further back from the wheel.
Rear with:

Without (picture two):

God damn useless photographer... anyway, the flow is better at the bottom, much more attached, but overall more turbulent.
Need better pictures of this area I think.

So, conclusions:
No mudflaps improved(maybe??) flow after the wheels.
The undertray improved flow and downforce, but didn't make the wake visibly smaller-vortex generators may help with this.

Peter, I did the aircon and no aircon tests, but frankly I'm ashamed of the photos.
I can tell you there was no visible difference- pressure testing will need to be done to know what happening there I think.

This is very interesting!
Here is another aero tuft test done on a 93 civic i found when browsing around. Interesting forum too that might help.

G'day Joe,

I'm wondering if you've gone any further with your aero experiments?

I have to remove the wipers, intend to remove the external mirrors plus mudflaps and get the front spoiler as close to the ground as possible. I cannot do it here (uneven road surfaces) but will try to get some tufting done on the salt where it's relatively spoiler friendly (flat).

Cheers,
Rob
