Hah, went and got a puncture repair done today - saw a 215/35 17 stretched onto a 8.5" rim. The guy who picked it up looked to be about 18, so at twice his age its no wonder I don't "get it"

People can hate on my Supra rims and fat tyres (its fun to judge people after all!), they give a comfortable safe ride on NZ's crappy roads, and I think they suit the car, so I'm happy.

Mike, I'm told its all from the "drift" scene. Apparently the manufacturers are even re-inforcing the sidewalls these days so they can fit them like that without them failing! (according to the guy who did my puncture repair)

215 on a 8.5" ! I could only Imagine how stupid that would look!

..As well as being a waste of potential when it could fit a 245-255 comfortably, putting far more surface area on the road... I really don't get some people... I bet it was a rubbish brand of tire too! I at a similar age just cringe at that sort of thing.

Nothing wrong with your Supra 16's Matt! Interestingly I'm getting rid of the 17 replica BMW AC wheels on my car and getting a set of 16x8 BBS E38 7 series Basketweave wheels with a 1" lip that have a good set of 235/60r16's. Latter I will fit a top pair of 245/60r16 or 245/55/r16's on the rear. I prefer this look in some ways, it's not like I'm trying to look 'cool' though it will look respectable, especially that I have put German H&R lowering springs in it so that it sits evenly an inch lower than factory. Plus.... it will ride nicely over our horrible Auckland roads!

Later I plan to get a set of 18" BBS spoked alloys, but won't until I can find the right ones I'm after and afford them easily.

Interesting infomation Matt, I guess it's even better news for people that fit them as they are supposed to!

Or perhaps he uses them for drifting? I mean drifting is a sport these days........not sure why though, i mean its like ballet dancing for people who wished they could rally :-)

leave the poor kids alone

my 1st few cars all had 4.5" wide rims and a taller sidewall profile than the tyre width... and approx 300hp later on in it's higher state of tune and drums for brakes lol....

more slop in the steering than most cars have as steering lock nowdays.. ahh the fun

How did this turn into a discussion about stretch tyres.

I am not a fan of stretching tyres onto rims, not safe in my opinion.

It was a Dunlop tyre I think - not a terrible brand. Could be he was a drift head - didn't see the car as he came to pick it up in a Sunny or something. Rim looked to be quite high quality. Perhaps he was picking up just 1 tyre as he'd had a blow out? The sidewalls looked like ski-ramps - actually concave!
