Hi guys,
I'm thinking my car could do with a new lick of paint as it has a few scratches, a couple of hardly noticeable dents i think i might have got from hail and I'm fitting a new kit. I'm trying to find a good painter but i have been to numerous smash repairs and i just don't feel any confidence with them.

My car is silver at the moment and i was thinking of changing it to a metallic blue, what do you guys think? Will it look tacky if i don't do the engine bay, huge extra cost there. Do they take all the window seals out and are these expensive? What is a good price to pay and has anyone got any recommendations of people they have dealt with? I don't earn a fortune and its hard enough to keep this car going when it just loves to break down and break expensive things but i refuse to give it up and am trying to get it looking perfect again.

David you're probably going to get responses along the lines of 'how longs a piece of string?' It's very difficult, to give an approximate cost, and I have heard figures from $3-$13K which is not helpful. I CAN recommend Crows Nest Panel Shop though.

THESE GUYS seem to specialise in Jap gray market and body kits, but I have NO experience of them - not sure if anyone here has?

To be honest regardless of being to some panel shops and you don't feel any confidence with them then that is one of your first problem. Panel shops get people in day after day with i want to respray my car get a quote and never return. I know some places are lazy yes but others are flat out if they do insurance jobs.

To respray in another colour like metallic blue is going to cost you more then just freshing up the silver paint work that is already on the car. Like what has already been said prices very to what you want done etc.

he rarely does custom jobs cause they take alot of time compared to insurance work but his work is awesome they cost a bit more but they make sure they do it right.. if there are any dints get repaired properly not bogged.. but you can give them a call and see if they are up for it. mine took a while as they were having staff issues and had alot of problems trying to get the money out of the insurance company to try start mine off as they wouldnt pay for anything (nrma) and i had to keep whinging at them for months to get stuff fixed from crash.. alot of electrical stuff wasnt paid for at the end inc blinky dash and leaking a/c and dvd player which were apparently not working at time of crash hahaha yeah i just drive around with no speedo or tacho or temp or fuel gauge lol...

oh and i didnt get engine bay done... mine had all accessories and i couldnt be bothered taking it all out or paying the labour to do so.. as long as its a neutral colour to your new colour should be fine. mine was bare metal respray other than engine bay..

price wise alot of sydney people would be able to do it cheaper and quicker, just depends on what you want..

also too how does your bodykit fit you might want to get it fixed up at the same time. mine fitted perfect as was genuine so i was lucky there.

post some pics up so we can see what it looks like now.

I'm at work in WA so don't have a camera and wont be back in NSW for 3 weeks but I'll try to get someone to send me some. Thats so funny it was your car that made me really want to get a respray. I was thinking of going a darker blue than your's with a purple pearl. Body is pretty good other than a couple of tiny depressions i wouldn't even call them dents in the roof. Kit fits pretty well but i have a new one waiting for me at home and don't know what that's going to fit like. Bare metal usually costs a crap load more than just being rubbed back. Really cant afford to spend anything more than 5 grand and i was aiming at 4 since the cars only worth 8 or 9.

yeah if you look around you should get a respray for 4 but try have a look at the quality of their stuff before you decide.. i think a dark metallic purple looks pretty cool aswell.maybe the dark holden colour or ford colour arent too bad, mine is actually a metallic blue with a blue pearl. when the sun shines on its a totally different coloured car than in the shade or overcast. its very very very similar to bayside blue (r34 blue) but when i had colour cards sprayed up the shockwave just shined in the sun compared to the bayside. and bayside had 3 pearls so sticking with 2 made it cheaper. id try stay with something that is easily replicated as in find a car with the colour you really want and get the paint code and go with that. then later repairs are easier and also better chance of matching up.

if the body kit fits good you may just want to stick with that one and keep the other as a spare. just to save some money in making the other one fit. also too if you strip the interior yourself you could save alot of money on labour. cause at the very least i highly recommend taking the windows out to get the paint done properly instead of a yr or so down the track the clear start to come off around the windows or sills etc cause it was just taped and sprayed.
i think you could get away with not doing engine bay but id make sure you do door surrounds and boot surround. if you look at my engine bay i got mine sprayed in a line on the guard so it has a clean line instead of having a wavy line by doing the whole guard a different colour.

That's really good advice champ. I've bought a full black interior so ill put off changing it untill i have the money together for the spray, kill two birds with one stone.

I didn't quite get what you ment by having a line on the guard, do you mean just inside the engine bay? I'll take the glass out cause if i'm going to spend this much on a paint job i want it to last. I also like the idea of a standard colour. I know of a paint thats black with blue and violet pearl that i have always wanted. Is this what you mean by a standard colour, a pre mixed one. Or do you mean something that hasn't got pearls or anything in it.

Thanks for all your advice by the way it good finding out from someone who has had a respray done instead of shops who either just want to get you in and out or those who don't give a crap.

no worries. yeah i mean standard colour as in something that is on a production car, alot have pearls but they have specific colour codes for base, pearls and metallic thickness or grain i think they call it as in how thick the flakes are in the metallic, then that can be easily matched up for repairs as all panel shops will have that specific cars code and way of painting. or if you get it done a custom colour you like try get a well known brand like ppg that has the codes on the colour charts that you can match up. if you get a colour chart off them it will really open you up to how many combinations of colours and metallics and pearls there are but if you look at it too long you will confuse yourself on what you want!! a few minutes of looking at the ppg one and house of kolour made me want candy's with flip paint haha but you will get stone chips and stuff like that or may one day get a scratch needs repair or cracked fibreglass and if its a paint thats easily blended in you can repair a panel and wont look out of place.. not like a candy flip or chameleon where a stone chip and you are pretty much screwed. ill show you a pic here i have just a straight line going down inner edge of guard so you look down crack you still see outside blue but if you open your bonnet it has a nice straight line that transfers to your engine bay colour.
and here is also a pic of what it could have looked like as a purply colour..

I'll grab a few of those colour charts when i get back and have a look. Damn thats an awesome engine bay and i see what you mean by the strait line. Do you even have a fan in there?

When i get back I'll have a chat to the guys who have done your as they look like they know what they are doing.

that doesnt look too bad david i actually like that sticker setup i dont usually do. that would look awesome out on a track. if you ever want to get rid of that wing let me know i want to get another boot with a wing setup for wakefield..
have you though about redoing the silver and getting a pearl like maybe a blue or purple?

which wheels do you have on it now?

I was thinking about that but i thought it might just look like an off colour silver. I think i did alright with the stickers i think im just fed up with them cause i've had them on for four years and the paintwork is annoying me.

The wing is awesome, it creates so much down force its not funny you can feel the whole car squat down when your going round corners. I need to give the carbon a polish though.

If i went with a silver again with a blue or purple pearl it would blend in with the engine bay better to.

The wheels in the first photo are the ones on the car now. The ones in the second photo go well with the colour but they are really common and had a few scratches so i changed them. I like the dish on the new ones though.

it depends on the silver you have ive heard if you do it right with a pearl on silver it should look std and then flip to the pearl colour. unlike white where too much pearl makes it dull and dirty looking.
its something you can talk with a good panel beater with as im not haha
yeah ive heard set up you can feel alot of difference in the rear end. eventually i want to just get a boot with gt wing and a carbon bonnet to use at wakefield.. just never have the money to do it and car keeps needing attention lol
i think the wheels you have on there now are better looking.

You must have spent all your money on the engine bay, just look at it its bloody awesome ridiculas. Wing cost me 500 4 years ago so you can probably get them cheaper now. Re inforce the boot though otherwise you will get big dent in it from the down force. happened to me the first time so i had to get another boot and strengthen it.

David, was very, very happy with the worth performed by them. Mine was part insurance job, as someone decided to trash the hell out the body work of the car. Total cost was about $7k. For that they took out the kicked in rears, the dents in the roof, bonnet and boot where it was jumped on, and did a bare metal respray excluding the engine bay. All windows etc were taken out for it, and the turn around time was about 8 months. Well worth the wait. I also got it sprayed a different white, its a Mazda white, with a slight pearl over the top.

Bob will take his time, but the results are worth it. Only the other week I got asked the question when I got it done, its hard to explain it was almost 4 years ago now..

Our former Soarer was Pearl White (051) but the new owner wanted something different to the Crown he also owned which was white. He went for burgundy with a bronze pearl, and had the engine bay blacked out (semi-flat black). As the engine bay paint already had ingrained crap from Japan (which I could never get off) it looked better than dirty white.
