I need to reseal my headlights but I'm not too keen on the oven (rental property - dodgey oven) or the heatgun method....

Having just sold my Skyline and left the R31 forum, the tried & true method for fixing leaky rear taillights was to soak the assembly in turps - they literally fall apart after 24 hours.

I searched and found turps as a recommended solvent for cleaning the goop off once the headlight came apart so this should work ...

Has anyone tried this?

G'day Cameron,

Did you end up trying the turps method?

Some moron drilled holes in the ace of my headlights so I need to seperate them not only to clean but also to repair the lenses. Common sense was clearly optional the day he/she was born.

cheers,

I think if it doe's work... Most of us will be very interested... Get back to us ASAP if you do it and it works.. I'm just about to do the same thing but was going to use the oven... If this is going to be an easy way.. I'm going to do it that way... Waiting on your results mate!

Jeff,

Don't wait for me, I'll oven them if someone else hasn't done it successfully.

I did not have a container big enough to put the headlight in... then I got impatient and put them in the oven for 1 hour at 60deg and they came apart very easily - but I cleaned them up with turps and it absolutely melts through the glue - I would suggest soaking the assembly overnight and they should just pull apart... might make it a bit messy though - but it is a messy job!

Thanks Cameron,

I think it's looking lie the oven for me. Unless you had a close fitting container it'd cost a quid in turps too.

Aaron,

Eucalyptus oil may work for you. My only advise is to try a tiny bit somewhere not obvious no matter what you use.

Robert I did mine with a heat gun and that worked a treat, was weary of the oven myself.

I used the oven method, came apart nice and easy, the hard part is removing the old sealant, took me 6 hours to do both lights.

ok robert i might see if i can get a hold of some scrap tint pieces from my tinter and try some different stuff on it see if it comes off without making is cloudy :-)
also be careful when you take the sealant off as i have a nice scar over my knuckle and got 10 stitches when i slipped cause the sealant was getting cold and harder so i pushed harder to get it off and slipped lol

From what I'm reading the favorites are:

a)oven to separate
b)turps to clean up the old sealant.

That'll be the way I go.
Cheers,
Rob
