My MR2 had 5% all round, looked the ducks guts for show but was a pain to drive at night. Was never defected but I guess I am in Hobart after all...
Nothing is "illegal" with respect to ADRs guys, only "defectable"
But show aside, the ADRs are there for a reason and 35% still looks decent and provides due visibility. Ask your tinting shop about "midnight tint" - I'm not sure exactly how this differs from the 35% visibility rule but it sure looks darker from the outside

I got Midnight something from Tint a car (they now have one they call Midnight Express - so I can only assume it is the same one I got all those years ago), looked great on a white car. It is a black tint, rather than a reflective tint, like the Formula one they always push.

That's the one! They've started advertising it in magazines lately too. I have that on my Soarer. Have been pulled over once and an officer tried to defect me. Lucky I keep the receipt in the glovebox, stating '35%' - effectively transferring the onus to my local tint shop.
I even politely asked him if he would like to sit in the car and look through the window. He snuffed and drove off (now I know why they're called pigs)
