Guys, my car just got pummelled by cricket-ball sized hail stones in the storm that swept across Melbourne this afternoon. I'm devastated. Any suggestions on a panel beater that can be trusted to do a good job on a soarer, in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, would be appreciated.

Robert,

You could try:-

Kim Rohde @
Rohde Smash Repairs (03) 9758 2081 41 Forest Rd, Ferntree Gully VIC

Kim does a lot of work for Sports & Luxury Cars, Mustang Motorsport and has done three Soarers and a Lexus ES300 from my household (mention my name if you wish) Highly recommended.

You could even try him this afternoon, he may well still be there.

Bugger of a hail storm, just got my baby under cover (at great personal discomfort).

Tell me about it. Mine is parked down stairs but managed to cop a nice camoflage of leaves on my car lol! I was enjoying the wild weather. Crown was totally leaking throughout! Epic adventure!

On the news I saw a white soarer up to the top of its wheels in water. Anybody here?

Awwww... thats horrible! you poor thing. Is it really bad? The hail stones in my area were big but not that big, kinda like big rocks, not as big as a golf ball. I quickly moved my car. I hope I dont wake up and see dints everywhere, i already had a quick check. My area (melton) was flooded bad. Are you insured for damage like that? Theres a good panel beater around dandenong, in the industrial bit, call A-Z repairs/panel beaters something like that, the guys name is Arthur.

Man that's terrible. I was nervous as hell. Left my fastback in the driveway when I went out this morning. Just got back, luckily no damage.

Happened too quick to do much. Saw the dark clouds rolling in and by the time I'd grabbed the keys the first chunks of ice were already hitting the cars in the drive. I'm in upper ferntree gully, which copped a real battering. Anyway, I will try Rhodes as they are only a couple of minutes away.

Miles - are you still hiring out that soda blaster? Might look into doing some of the prep work myself to keep the costs down.

I doubt blasting is going to save you any money on repair - probably the opposite. Hail damage can be repaired a few different ways. Bare metal isn't going to make it much easier.

How bad are the dents? Show us some photos.

Got insurance?

oh no hope your car was insured.
personally id try get it done bare metal as ive seen alot of cars with hail damage repaired and where they are repaired later on the paint cracks and starts to rust or clear goes funny.
i guess it also depends on who you get to do it.
the only problem will also be in melbourne there will be thousands of cars needed insurance work so they will dodge them to get them all done quickly and not take their time. id try go somewhere else wait a bit for it to calm down or something.

We had one of our cars hammered a few years ago to the tune of about 4.5k. They put on a new bonnet, boot and 2 doors. As for the rest, the dents were all pushed out from behind. No bog etc. 4-5 years on and there have been no issues with paint or rust. You'd simply never know.

Don't go mad and blast your car yet. Get some ideas from GOOD panel beaters and the like. And do it fast before you are at the back of many months worth of waiting lists.

Mine also got hit badly.

Very depressing with so much love given to this car :-(

I just couldn't make it back in time - so close I really am annoyed. Thanks for suggesting a place nearby - I will take it to Kim and get a quote.

Mine got it mainly on bonnet/boot - seems the metal is thinner there.

The roof has few, but much much less.

Hopefully they can repair this car.

It reminds me of the time I used to ride my BMX around, was pooring down real heavily and as I was coming home I did a skid as the footpath curved.

Meanwhile at the same time a person in his XR6 saw me, so he planted his foot down and slid out on the intersection and straight into a pole.

Meanwhile I happily skidded away on the BMX and got home safely.
