looks like:
1. the drivers door hinge may have collapsed?
2. the bolts mounting the hinge/door have loosened?
3. the car was in a smash and not repaired properly. ( I assume you would be aware of this if there had been a smash, LOL)
As a short term fix you could bend the guard in so the door clears it. Otherwise you need to find the source of the problem. My guess would be the hinge has died.
I haven't figured out if there is any adjustment in the door hinge, but knowing Toyota there would be, but you will need the door open to access the hinge.

I am trying to change my door hinge and have got the hinge from daryl with instructions but first step says to remove the inner footwell cover. What is the inner footwell cover and how do I remove it?? Can any one help me?? I'm not that bad, I just sorted the door handle after breaking the mechanism so don't be too harsh on me.

Hi Ben. Yeh, all the wiring is behind the carpet. We have changed the hinge and all is working well. I am a bit reluctant to start pulling things apart I not absolutely sure it is the right thing to do. Getting the wiring plugs out was the hardest bit and getting the door suitably balanced when off the hinges. Anyway on to the next job. LOL

Have finished putting the on reconditioned door hinge, and are very pleased with the outcome after using the car a couple of days now. Getting a recon hinge from Daryl Demarte was definitely the way to go. So easy following his instructions and the hinge has grease nipples too. Will definitely do the same if the other one goes. No problems with the posting of the hinge. Everything went very smoothly. Thanks heaps Daryl
