Warning to all Sunroof soarer owners. Might be worth while everyone to do a quick check.
I noticed a while ago when raining I had a large amount of water coming out of the rear fender, didn’t look right, but because the car is now always garaged and a visual check showed no rust or hole I didn’t worry too much about it..
As I was taking my car apart I took the opportunity to investigate and found that the side of my boot has been full of water. Not good, the picture shows that some of the fender bolts have completely rusted, at this stage not sure how much rust damage there is but appears this has been going on some time, well before my ownership.

My theory as to what caused this…
Soarer boots appear to be almost 100% sealed, on each side there is a black box (has been taken out in the photo but you can see the outline where it should be) I believe this is a pressure relief box that has flaps that swings open when the boot is closed to release the pressure. I have removed the speakers so I have no need for these and will just replace with a metal sheet or plastic.
There is a clear hose that just sits into a grommet attached to this pressure relief box. On this particular side this hose was out of the grommet and just sitting in the boot..
I believe this hose is to take the water from the sunroof to outside the car.. the sunroofs are designed to leak? Is this right?
People might be able shed a little more light on this matter.

I think everyone should just take the time to have a quick look to make sure there hasn’t been any water there and make sure that hose is still in the grommet.

I would also like to know if anyone else has had this problem?

Ken, I think you will find that most sunroofs have 4 drains, 1 in each corner. They run to LH front, LH rear, RH front, RH rear of the car, and exit out onto the ground via these tubes you talk of.
These tubes should go thru grommets of some sort out thru the bodywork to drain externally.
My daughters HSV had water in the front LH floor, and despite 3 weeks at a panel shop, no luck in finding the leak.
It took the knowledge of a friend who told us about the sunroof drains, and on inspection, the LH drain tube was just going into the LH sill panel, filling that with water, that would then come onto the floor when going around corners etc.
But the worse part for us was when we told the panelshop owner what we had found, was his comment.
Oh, does your car have a sunroof, I hadnt noticed!!

Anyway, sorry about the long winded reply, I better go check my Soarers sunroof.

Ken, i believe these little black boxes, 1 either side, are actually a ventilation system to rid boot cavity of any fuel vapours and temperature build up. The tube on the right rear is from fuel tank (is on mine, i have no sunroof)looks to be an overflow from the fuel filler. All modern factory sunroofs have a drain system of tubes running from their closing channel down the pillars. I worked in quality control at Holden and these tubes caused no end of problems before the cars even left the GMH plant...

Mine was exactly the same as this, the hose became detached from the vent box and was emptying itself into my boot, reconnected it, and she was sweet.

Dave, I might have to correct you on the black boxes, there are only design to open when boot is in pressure ie closing the boot and not for ventilation or vapours. If there are vapours in your boot, it would be a priority to find out what the issue is…
Yeah the sunroof soarers have 3 tubes, 2 big ones, one on each side for the sunroof, and the smaller fuel over flow on the right which dumps straight out the back via a grommet.
Just curious to know that the problems where at GMH plant with the sunroofs? It might spark me to check it out further for other issues.

GMH was Mainly problems during installation Ken, where the A pillar plastic drain tubes would get a kink in them, but we did have blockages from foreign objects also. Somehow debris would find its way into the drain tubes somewhere between the pipe work leaving Japan/ Germany/ France (or where ever the parts source was) and the completed vehicle storage yard out back of Holdens plant lol

The vents are for venting the car , when AC/heater is on fresh air from out side it has to vent stale air outside other wise it would stop blowing as pressure went higher, without these vents it would be hard to close a door ,if you push the door on and off the door seals you can hear the vents clicking.
