Yesterday when browsing the Gabriel catalogue in Supercheap, I found that they have a number for boot struts for our cars (They list as Lexus sc250GT, sc300, sc400). Supercheap didn't have them in stock, but if they are a regularly available item they should be about $40 each - comparable to the cost of regassing. (Well, here in Tasmania, anyway!)

Do they have different struts for boots with and without spoilers? Regassers use different pressures due to the difference in weight.

I'll get the part number and post it in a few days - I didn't have a pen on me in the shop and I don't trust my memory with long numbers otherwise I would have posted it initially. I suppose we shouldn't be too optimistic that the struts are actually available even if a catalogue part number for them exists. I'll make a few enquiries...

Thanks for posting this, Jason! I was going to after I ordered my set today. Only difference - I'm paying $80.20 a set for exactly the same product from SuperCheap. Seems an awful lot for freight!

Picked them up today will try and fit them tomorrow or day after, put the wheels back on mine today and took it off the stands will start it tomorrow. The struts are for the wifes, mine are ok.
They had to order them in so check you're closest super cheap for price. If Morley is cheapest you may be able to order by phone but I did have to leave a $12 deposit.
I have seen a tutorial on the web somewhere also, looked it up after it bit me once. I do remember it mentioning that there is some release that allows the boot to go further thus extending the struts fully prior to removal.

Tom, posting the scan of your receipt just saved me $33.00!
I ordered mine from my local SuperCheap on the same day as you ordered yours, only I was quoted $80.20 for 2, with a $20 deposit required. Today they arrived. Very fortunately I read the forum before I went to collect them, and printed out the page with your receipt on it.
Thus equipped I fronted the assistant at SuperCheap about how come I had to pay $33 more for the same product than someone in Perth, considering freight etc etc. The fellow looked up some details on his computer, said "Hmmm... just a minute... I think I can do yours for the same price!" Which he did. I left Supercheap with my struts and $33 more in my pocket than I thought I would have had. So, Tom, thanks mate - I owe you - but then again I put everyone onto the Gabriel struts so maybe virtue is its own reward...
Darryn, thanks for the installation link too. Reading through the 100+ posts in that topic, I note that the 4508 was mentioned several times as a strut suitable for cars with spoilers - I haven't installed mine yet, but I'll let you know how they work with my car (which has the standard spoiler).

John, glad to be of help. I have fitted the struts took all of 15 minutes. The instructions on the back of the packet were all that was needed but it is fairly straight forward. The car they were fitted to has a spoiler and they lift it no problem. After having done the wifes I reckon I could knock the next time over in 5 minutes flat. All you need is a common screwdriver ( as opposed to phillips head)about 3mm in width and mate to hold the boot up.

Hey Pen, I tried to upload a video from my phone of the boot opening to show the struts in action for those interested in their performance, however the file extension is .3gp, which will play in real player or a web browser with the plugin but the server does not recognise the extension and labels it .unk. This causes those who click on the link to be given a snapshot of the matrix.(ie a page full of hex and other characters)
Is this a simple config issue or should I throw the concept over my left shoulder.
If the file was downloaded and renamed to *.3gp and then dragged into a browser it played.
Tried to convert it to an avi but it came out munted.

Yep, easy as! Just finished mine and now the lid pops open about 25mm when you press the button. When you lift the lid slightly, it then glides fully open by itself in a very satisfying way! (Remember: my car has a standard spoiler) I changed the ball joints on mine for those in the kit, too. The kit ones are 11mm spanner size, the originals are 12mm. Be aware (if you haven't explored the "how to" link yet) that the originals were Locktited in place, so you may need to heat them to loosen them up. Someone had had mine out before, I would think, as it was no big deal for me. Some posters on that US link advocate using a Propane torch to apply heat, but I think this is very risky in that area of the car - I'd opt for a heat gun or a large soldering iron. By the way, the 4508's come with new (and an excellent design) retaining clips to replace the "C" clips on the "eye" end.

So is it a Gabriel kit?? Or do they just bring in the Strong Arm kits??

Just wondering because Supercheap don't have the Gabriel range over here

The struts packaging has reference to a company Arvin Meritor on them. Arvin Meritor actually make all Gabriel Products inc StrongARm branded products. (arvinmeritor.com). In Supercheap, I was looking through a Gabriel company catalogue, not one specifically printed for SuperCheap. The listings included all susp struts, bonnet struts etc, but for our cars only the boot struts had a listing. So I think you will find StrongArm=Gabriel, and all you need to do is find a Gabriel Agent in NZ and you should be OK. Good Luck!
