It's worth noting that road dust may eventually clog up the drain pipe leading from the fuel filler bay to just below and behind the rear mudflap. This drain is important as it conducts any petrol overflow (including vapour) away from your paintwork. Also stops water accumulating in the filler recess.

Mine had clogged up badly, and I attempted to clear it with a piece of 3mm automotive wire. This worked ok, dislodging lots of rubbish, but the wire won't go right through. Possibly a non-return valve at the bottom?
Anyway, final trick was to use compressed air to blast out the last of the muck. Worked well.
