Hey
Just wondering who can fix up the headlights from moisture and reaseal them in melbourne?
Also does anyone know what number are for the blue globes instead of the standard ones for the low beam and high beams?
Thanks

Patrick,

Why not give it a go yourself? Its really a very easy job, just time consuming. Follow the tutorials that are around - but you only need to set the oven to around 100 degrees (at least for my fan forced oven) and leave the light in for about 5 minutes. Make sure you get as much of the grey sticky crap off as you possibly can - it comes off pretty easy when its hot.

Matthew, do you pre heat the oven to 100? or just throw the lights in, set oven to 100, and leave for 5 mins?

When the little "Winkie" pops out, the headlights are done.
Remove from oven, baste with a rich brown gravy, rest for 10 mins, and serve on a platter with vegetables.
Garnish with fresh Parsley.
Add salt & pepper to taste

Yup, I took all the clips off first, unscrewed the mounting bracket and any other screws I could find, then I pre-heated to 100 degrees on fan forced bake, put the light on a dish cloth on an oven tray (to stop hot metal being in contact with the plastic) and left it for 5 minutes. Took it out and levered it apart with a butter knife - removed the reflectors and then popped it back it for a bit to re-heat the gray sticky crap so I could scrape it all off with the butter knife. Simple.

D-Mastic to stick them back together, unless you like the idea of something going wrong with the seal and not been able to get them apart to re-clean them.

I practiced on a cheap (Soarer-like) light from EBay. Other than cutting my fingers on glass floating around (the lens had been damaged) it was reasonably easy.

The grey goo looked a lot like Sikaflex, as mentioned, so I wonder if anyone has tried it? I can get that at the hardware store, but not D-Mastic.

I also wonder, what is the point removing the old goo? One might as well just reheat and reseal with the old stuff. Apparently, this isn't where the lights let moisture in, anyway. You could always run a small bead of sealer around the outside, after reattaching the halves.

I just put my car to luxury cars its only $80 for a headlight and fixed and everything so its pretty cheap and i'll get them to change the orange globe to a clear one aswell.

What headlights fits the soarers which are blue?
Does anyone have the product code so I can purchase a pair?

I assume you're talking about bulbs/globes, Patrick? They are available cheaply off EBay, make sure you get the right ones and you'll need to modify 9005 ones. Technically they real ones are 9005J but these are only available (apparently) from the original Koito (yellow!!) and PIAA (Expensive!!)

These globes (the EBay ones) appear to be made made China as the sellers are usually in Hong Kong. I have several sets, one 65W uncapped for the high beams didn't work on receipt, the others, including H3 for '97 fogs and H1 for the Wizard, work fine. It was a pain modifying the 9005s for high and low beam though.

Most guys here appear to just chop the lugs but I found the whole lug came off so a Dremel tool is better (although slow and messy).

To confuse matters some local Au cars were modified during compliance to take 9006 (like US cars) so you'd better check.

These are equivalent to HB3 and HB4- someone else better tell you which is which I always forget:-)

Mostly because when you pull it apart it does a melted cheese impersonation and goes all over the place.

The one I practiced on ( not a Soarer light, but similar) didn't do this too badly. I seem to recall from Peter Nitschke's tutorial, that he suggested keeping the old stuff due to the hassle of getting it off.

Yeah, I just figured that it was easier to get rid of it than to try and make it look tidy again once it was back together. But I guess it doesnt really matter what it looks like as nobody is ever really going to look at it. Didn't take too long to get rid of it, just re-warm, scrape, re-warm, scrape...
