Hey all,

Was at Sydney Autosalon last weekend and ran into team jetspeed who provided my kit, anyway he had a stack of carbon fibre bonnets for various cars, but no soarers.
So I asked him, whats the story, he told me that he has had that many enquiries about them for soarers in both standard OEM bonnets and vented bonnets.
So I think they are on the drawing boards for us finally.
I was thinking to get the ball rolling a little quicker and if we can get a group buy type situation, get them made quicker and most likely at a good price as well.
Will have to confirm with jetspeed if this is possible as well.

They are already available in oem or vented carbon finish/fibreglass backing from Unique Autosports or in 100% pure carbon fibre through a supplier in Queensland.
Like most things in life, when it comes to carbon/carbon finish bonnets, you usually get what you pay for in quality, finish and strength.... and if it was cheap AND came from Jetspeed, I personally wouldn't go anywhere near it.

Yep, as Manny said... vented available from UAS for around $1100 each, or OEM from Qld for around the $1800-$2k mark I believe. Damien Smith has a full carbon OEM one. Weighs 9kg compared to ~27kg like the factory one.

generally NO they are not legal . well not in QLD anyways.

Some people say they can be engineered but i dont know about that.

I've heard its something to do with the bonnet shattering in an accident??

Jury still out.

I do like the idea of lighter bonnets. Much like the alloy ones that come on the GTRs

I believe the ADR specifies that if a car is built in 92+ then an aftermarket carbon-fibre / fibreglass bonnet is not legal. Any cars built prior to 92 are allowed to have one of these bonnets. These are the rules in Perth, so not sure how they would vary in other states.

I think the main issue is vented bonnets because if you have a radiator burst or smoke etc it can obscure your windscreen. My insurance company knows I have a OEM style CF bonnet and isn't concerned.

damien, that's correct. the general rule is that vented bonnets are not legal in brisbane if the vents slope towards the driver. ie a WRX scoop is legal - if a pipe bursts, oil will not go on your windscreen. but if its a depressed vent, the oil can spurt onto your field of vision.

i have also heard that cf bonnets are illegal due to the way they shatter (into shards), rather than crumpling. apparently there are stories of drivers and pedestrians getting decapitated.

I had a Carbon Fibre bonnet on my 97 civic and it passed over the pits twice. In Perth.

According to the pits they say any vented hood must have a grill or such as mentioned earlier to stop fluid from bursting onto your windscreen. Well should the event of anything like this happening, I wonder if anyone will use their WINDSCREEN WIPERS ? ~ stupid ADR ruling !

Adam, if oil is sprayed onto the windscreen, using the wipers isn't going to help the problem... more like make it worse as it would spread it over the whole window.

Ive always used a soapy mixture for my wiper water. But then again, id like to see a pipe burst and have oil be sprayed on the window tho.

i think everyone has figured it out but in Qld they are illegal to have any vents that can allow water/steam/oil onto the windscreen. Custom Carbon are trying to get there bonnets passed by the RTA and queensland transport to make them legal as far as i know. It's the same as any modification we make to our cars that we want to make legal, Custom Carbon have to prove that they are safe etc etc etc from main roads.

If anyone has a carbon fibre bonnet or a vented one could you post some pics of it up? I was thinking about getting one but am not sure if I want to paint it or not.

I presented a Lotus Elise to the guys at the pits and that made a few of them satisfied they passed my old car with a vented carbon bonnet. The issue is with crash testing, theory has it that the carbon doesnt crack or crumble and go straight into the window upon impact. Several cases of head on collisions have been reported to prove this is totally false. Yet we are still awaiting official approval for their use.

Yes, they are legal to use, RTA's rules are enforced all over Aus. and there is nothing stated that they can't be used.
If they would be illegal, you would not see any Lotus Elite or Ferrari or Lamborghini on the roads (maybe more brands using carbon fibre).

If the item is OEM, then there are no issues with registration.
Hence Ferrari's and the like can be registered if they suit the bill.
If it is an aftermarket item, then it comes under alterations legislation which is good because that is open to individual interpretation.
RTA legislation does not apply in the NT like it does for you guys, you should see some of the death traps on our roads, and for a carton there is a good chance you can get a TT scooter past the pits.
