I,m currently having some problems with my cats (2 of the little buggers (punky and trooper, with one more that we found in a park on fight night - i think he is about 3 weeks old,he doesn't count he can barely walk, we have called him Kosta).
Now that winter is coming on the cats seem to enjoy the heat given off by the engine. They are showing this by making their way up onto the bonnet and in the process scratching the bajeebus out of the paint.
Just recently after a decent wash and wax, one of my cats jumped up onto the bonnet. As you all can understand i was suitably unimpressed, so in the heat of the moment i threw the polish rag at him.
WORST DECISION EVER!!
You know how characters in the cartoons when they try to run really fast stand on the same spot with their legs spinning.....
Lets just say that the cat must have been practising this technique (with his personal addition of claws).
i now have a bonnet that looks like an angry ex wife has attacked it with a rake, and it wont buff out.
I'm now considering getting either a shotgun or a car cover. i think the second option may be the most "legal". Does anyone have a car cover? does it work against cat scratches??
Price and description are above and below in the same thread.
It provides a surface the cat can walk on without needing claws while if they do put them down, the cover is thick enough to give some protection. A cheapie will be too thin.

If I wasn't so lazy I'd put the car in the garage every night instead of just on weekends. Mind you, the cat would probably love that - warm car AND indoors...

I did see for quite cheap advertised outside an autobarn as I drove by, a hail car cover. It looked to be a thicker cover which might be thick enough to stop the claws. Then you could spray the cover with some of that stuff that cats don't like the smell of(not shotty pellets) and that hopefully would put them off so they don not get into a lifetime habbit of climbing up there in the first place.

I've seen a cheapy hail cover before, but it was inflatable. Me thinks cat claws would go straight through it.

Shotties are still legal, aren't they? It's just the pump-action ones that aren't, so don't miss.

Not inflatable like your partner Tim (btw, thanks for the loan). This was just a thicker than normal cover but I was only driving past and saw it displayed on a vehicle. Not a close up look.
I just put a rubber mat that I bought from clark rubber just to cover the bonnet. The cat still gets on it, however doesn't scratch the out of it.

Been scratched 1 too many times to be able to look at these pets as cute and cuddly. Do I antagonise cats to a point im asking for it ?? Never, I'm allergic to the bastards and keep as far away from them as possible yet they always seem to want to attack me.

Sounds like you've met one to many bad cats. My cat has never scratched or bitten me or anyone else that I know of. If she doesn't like someone, she just keeps away from them.
I have also been scratched by cats before, possums etc, bitten by dogs, spat on by Llamas, punched by humans - I don't hate any animal as an entire species just because of a few grumpy ones that have crossed my path. OK, I don't have allergies, so I can't relate to that
My parents have this black and white cat, that originally started out as my kitten, until after 2 weeks of no sleep, I gave it back to them...Anyway, the cats name is Syko, and trust me, its a well deserved name!!! For the first couple of years it had to have hormone injections from the vet to try and calm it down, it used to go ballistic sometimes. But every morning and evening guaranteed, it comes in for a cuddle with my mum and it snuggles right into her, Anyone else, good luck touching it!! And it has a thing for warm car engines!! But even though this cat can be wild at times, I still love cats!! Maybe just not this particular one!!
My mum's cat is the opposite, you have to basically ask it for permission before you pat it, and wait for the meow that he wants to be patted. If you just go up and pat him, he'll sink his claws and teeth in and bring his back legs up and kick box you!! And for some strange reason he likes Jeff Smith!!! *Ducks and runs for cover*

Have you tried pulling the cats legs off? I think that would make it hard for the cat to get up onto the bonnet without any legs, plus you then don't have to worry about the claws.

yeh same dramas,
i just put a towel down over my bonnet where the turbos are (favorite spot) he sits happily there and its not too hard to pull it off before i drive off.

My mate had the same problem. So what he did before bed one night he put curry powder and black pepper all over his car. he repeated this the following night.
The first night the cat jumped on as normal, smelt and tasted the peppers. Since then the cats have never been on the car.
