I've always been a little sceptical about the various fancy car care products around, and tended just to use car shampoo and plain old Turtle Wax with reasonable results. However, yesterday when polishing my headlights using Meguiars PlasticX, I went over the edge of the plastic onto the paint.
When I rubbed it off, I noted that the area that was affected came up really well - no swirl marks at all, and a deep glossy shine.....The Meguiars bottle says that it should not be used on paint, so I disregarded that and proceeded to polish a small section my bonnet with the stuff - hey presto great results....I assume that the plastic polish is a fairly aggressive cutting agent, and I have effectively removed an oxidised layer of clear coat, and should now probably apply a layer of wax.
Any comments? What is a good way to achieve similar results using the correct type of products?

STOP using Turtle Wax..............it's total BOLLOCKS, and ONLY useful if you're waxing your pet Turtle!.
Go IMMEDIATELY to your nearest friendly (or unfriendly!) auto parts store, and purchase some Meguires car care products, OR Mother's care care products...............do NOT accept substitutes!!!.
Let the Turtles be free, they do NOT belong on your car!.

Lawrence, to actually answer your question, if the Plastic-X has any silicone component, then you might not be doing a Good Thing. The silicon apparently leaches right through the paint to the metal and makes it almost impossible to paint over in the event you need touch up or repaint the panels.
Either that or Meguirs just want to sell you more product.

I bought some Meguiars scratch remover polish and some Gold Class wax. Three hours later and I've got to say, the paint is like a mirror. I sweated like a rapist, but the result is worth it I think.

I agree with Lawrence I used Meguiars Gold class wax too, it was a bit more expensive but on dark paint the results were fantastic much deeper reflective look.
Try this order:
1.Good clean (remove all loose dirt) 2.Cutting agent(gets rid of dirt stuck in paint and removes scratches) 3.Polish 4.Wax
By hand this takes me about 2 1/2 hrs but the results are great. But everyone has their own way of doing it. Also I wouldnt risk your paint over a $18 btl of polish, just follow the directions and you cant go wrong.

I've used plenty of Products over the years of owning Soarers and while I must agree that Megiuars and Mothers are 2 very good brands I have to say they aren't the best. AutoGlym would have to be the best brand of car care product and This is souly MY opinion from experience.
