So much hate, Where is the love people??
Just put a dog in the garage at night as well. The cat will have to go much higher than the car to survive, (ie, the top shelf or the ceiling rafters). A nice humane friendly way to solve all the problems.
(Unless it's like my Mum's cat, which will walk up to a dog, belt the crap out of it and WALK away. It's fricken hilarious to watch.)

We had a cat like that (Maintenance: 1954-1961) who came from a factory by the Pyrmont docks in Sydney. I recall about 1959 he was sitting in the sun on the front step when a large dog entered the yard. Maintenance (he first appeared as a kitten from that section of the factory and my father brought him home) simply stood up, walked toward the dog with suitable arching and frizzed tail, and slashed the dog, which disappeared to its house up the road never to return.
I also know stories of cats being ripped apart by dogs before their owner's eyes, but Maintenance was one ferocious cat who dominated the neighbourhood. Really nice to us, though.
