Anyone attempted this and what is the success rate? Put in new speakers and I didnt get speaker grills with my parcel shelf so I figured if its possible to make a parcel shelf then I could make a customised one with writing on it or something! and yes I have searched, you freakin nazi's :p

Its definately not illegal, My Uncle is a cop and he has helped build the parcel shelfs in my last 4 cars. Generally you are increasing the structural integrity of the car.

you start running into issues when you take to the existng shelf with a saw to make the holes bigger... building a new shelf on top of the existing is fine.

I work in car audio and we have come into all kinds of issues with QLD transport regarding cutting metal out of cars for installs, mainly the parcel shelf. I suppose if you rebuild it stronger than the factory shelf its ok. Maybe its a qld law?
In the Soarer the shelf is part of the body and also separates the fuel tank from the cabin so i would imaging replacing the parcel shelf could prove to be very dangerous in the event of an accident.
We have even had issues in cutting 6x9 holes into factory shelves only designed for 4" speakers.
Its all very well to call me ignorant Richard but i have a responsibility to my customers to ensure the work we carry out on their car is safe and legal... so i make it my business to know this stuff.

I realise my above post is rather irrelevent if Kim is only wanting to build a wooden shelf to put on top. But it serves for anyone else who may be thinking of taking to their shelf with a hacksaw

We are forever getting kiddies in their lancers wanting us to put 12" woofers and do all sorts of crazy stuff with their shelves... you'd be amazed at how many people dont know its illegal to cut metal out of your doors frame, they come in wanting 3 sets of 6" splits and an 8" sub in each door
