Hey everyone!
I have a TT soarer with the pale green and grey interior with woodgrain and I want to change it all to black. The light colouring is too hard to look after.

We have a smash repair business here so I can get hard plastics and woodgrain painted here but I wanted to find out about dyeing the fabrics and vinyls like the carpet etc...possibly even the seats if it can be done. They are the grey velour material though...don't know how that would go...

I read a few of your threads but no-one really goes into details of the actual products. I wanna know of products that have been tried and tested and that have actually lasted!

Any info would be great!

Thanks guys,
Kelly

I have done 2 soarers now with Leatherique on both leather and vinyl surfaces.

My current soarer I did just over 2 years ago now, and it looks exactly the same today as it did then :-)

Started to paint a couple of bits today using VHT Vinyl Dye in satin black. I only did the centre console lid (vinyl) and the cup holder (plastic). So far the centre console lid looks absolutely awesome! It has exceeded my expectations! It actually looks like black leather.

The plastic I am not so sure about...The last I looked at it, it looked like it just wasn't sticking to the plastic, like it was just sitting there on the surface, all wet...but time will tell. I am only testing at this stage, and then I will get right into it when I know what this product works best on. I'd say I'll be taking the plastic and woodgrain pieces to work to get painted in 2 pack...I don't think the vinyl paint is going to cut it in that department...

It took a lot of cleaning and scrubbing too, I don't know when I will get the time to do all of this...

Anyways, just thought you might be interested in my progress in case anyone else is thinking of getting rid of those colours that you just think "wtf was Toyota thinking..."

Adam - Full interior colour change would probably cost around $250-$300 I would think for all the dye etc.

Ben - They can colour match if you send them a sample (probably about 9/10 for colour accuracy I found)

I guess the thing to keep in mind with the leatherique stuff is it is recommended you use a small sprayer to apply (You can use a brush) while the VHT already comes in a can.

Having said that I've never used VHT so cant comment on how that compares to the leatherique.

Ive always thought a Black interior would be a good colour to have as the interior as long as its all done properly and lasts.

If I keep my Celsior long enough I would consider changing entire interior to a few black and charcoal colours from the blue. Its just its a rather dated look, and it would be nice to have a change, plus give the opportunity to make the interior look new again!

Only thing is though it would remove the originality of the car, but If done properly with quality paints and dyes I suppose It could increase the value of the car... Be more expensive than a Soarer though and I doubt I could ever really be bothered to do it, still.. I like the blue for now especially when is cleaned! :-)

Just Gave it some more thought so with all my spare time gave a crack on the computer to simulate a colour change, Couldnt really get it to black, but grey so gives an idea of whats possible... take look at the pictures

(Note colour picture is of when I first acquired the car, since then its much tidier and cleaner, looks rather dirty and dull in that picture.)

Mike, the grey looks much better than the blue. Looks a little more modern, I suppose it depends on the look you're after.

I am going black because I can't maintain the light green and grey colours, they get too dirty...plus they're not the nicest colours around...

I don't really have time to do it, but I am just going to do it bit by bit, so it's going to look very strange in the meantime...

I have new carpet on order too!! Going black with that too! I need new carpets anyways...when I first bought my car, I guess I didn't inspect it thoroughly enough because on the back floor, there was a floor mat covering a big patch of baldness! It looks like bleach was spilled on there and has eaten away the carpet, you can grab patches of it and it just comes off...looks gross...it's one of those "you-can't-see-it-but-I-know-it's-there" things that drives me nuts.

One more question...Do you reckon it's okay to Armour-All the vinyl pieces after I have dyed them?
Obviously I will wait the 72 hours first before doing it, I just want to shine it all up, but don't wanna remove the dye...I suppose I should try and find a bit where I can do a test patch...

I have painted the vinyl on my passengers door, my centre console and a couple of other bits (using VHT vinyl dye), and I am a little worried about how long it is going to last. I sprayed it on the weekend and spent hours cleaning them up beforehand and it scratches off in small patches. Am I wasting my time? I don't want to do all this and have to come back and do it all again in a few months time. I have left it to dry since Saturday...
