Seatbelts won't always lock when tugged, try testing it whilst you are on a downward slope.

My seatbelts lock fine, but don't retract properly by themselves sometimes.

I also wouldn't mind knowing of somewhere in Melb that could fix these issues. I assume it wouldn't be too hard a job as they all have to be changed at compliance anyway...

The OEM belts use a proper inertial system - that is, they will not lock up unless there is a forward or reverse force acting on them. Park the car on a hill and it will probably work OK, likewise pull on the belt while accelerating or decelerating and it will most likely work too.

Of course I was under the impression that aussie rules forced importers to replace the high quality OEM belts with crappo locally made ones that are "safer" so maybe they are faulty.

Muz, I believe the OEM ones are not inertia reels - they have the little explosives to lock up in an accident.

I have a quirk with my drivers seatbelt. If I lean forward it won't retract properly when I lean back again.
However If I unclip it for a second it will then retract, like there is an electrical switch somewhere. Does anyone know what issue this could be?

Anyone know the approximate cost of replacing both sets of front belts as well as both retractor/tensioner assemblies? My drivers belt just failed its WOF because of slight fraying.

I've looked for a guide to removing the necessary interior cladding but haven't found anything here on SC.

First thing to identify is if you have OEM belts or aftermarket Hemco or Autoliv belts.

If they have been replaced with Hemco/Autoliv belts, then you are looking at about 110-150 dollars each. When you take the reel out, the partnumber should be listed and also the mounting position. Im not sure with soarers but I think they are 90/90 reals (monting angles).

If they are OEM, then they have a standard dual lock tensioner and a pre tensioner. They are connected to the airbag system, so if you do remove them, as a precaution ensure the ignition is turned off before removal and stays off until they are fully connected again.

You have to remove the rear trim panels under the 1/4 windows..........then all will be revealed.

Thank you Ben, Don and Evan, your help much appreciated. The WOF was almost 3 weeks ago now, but I have been too busy to get on to sorting it out. The Soarer isn't used during the week now, so it's not been a priority but i have a months grace period to get it sorted and re-warranted free of charge before they charge me another $40-50 for another WOF, which is why I'm trying to get cracking on getting it sorted.

I can't get to my car at the moment but will be checking the belt for part numbers and brand to see if it's an original.

Evan, is your spare belt new?

I had to get a belt replaced about 5 years ago in my UZZ30 - I called a mobile guy who came out and replaced the belt with a matching colour (spruce)(but it was a webbed belt as is now required I believe) for $220 all up. I remember thinking it was a pretty good deal at the time, especially as he was fast, on time, and did a very good job, managing not to break any of the brittle old plastic. Can't remember the name of the company, and they probably don't have a branch in Welly, but that might give you an idea of what to pay.

Ordered both front belts from Toyota this morning - $307 for driver and $224 for passenger, exc GST.
2 week wait from Japan. Looking forward to that belt SNAPPING back.

One more thing to cross off my list.
