has anyone ever used vinyl paint or leather dye on a steering wheel to cover the light cracks in the leather from wear and tear?if so is it any good?

Yeah Scott , I've done it . It gives a good result for about 18 months , then gets shabby again.
Give the wheel a quick rub down with Isopropyl alcohol(Isocol) first , then several coats of the grey dye. Then use some leather preserver on it.
Be careful when removing the steering wheel / air bag , won't you.

isopropyl,is that as good as prepsol? and what did you use? spray on s h i t or what>?

Sorry Scott , Isocol is rubbing alcohol , you can buy it from the supermarket (it's not an automotive product)I use it just to get any oils off the wheel , so that the dye will stick.
I used VHT Penetrating Color Dye , Charcoal Gray Satin. Got it from an auto shop , for about $20.00. Only used about half the can. I did 3 or 4 coats on the wheel.
