Hi

Just a short observation. Many Australian Soarer owners have experienced the annoyance of an intermittent passenger seat rattle when no passenger is present. It always goes away when you have a passenger. Many hours spent disassembling seats, checking clips, tightening bolts and nuts and generally searching for the damn rattle seldom fixes the problem. Some people drive around with a pile of stuff on the seat to ensure peace and quiet. Others endlessly fiddle with seat back angles and position.

The noise in most cases comes from the passenger side seat belt stalk installed in place of the original Japanese unit when your car was imported and complied. For some reason this is quite hard to spot by listening, if in doubt just do up the seat belt without a passenger present and enjoy the silence.

The fix is to replace the seat belt stalk with a new one that does not rattle. Modifying the old one is neither legal or recommended.

I know this is pretty minor but it has irritated the crap out of me for years until I worked it out.

Regards

Roger

Great, now how about the small movement, generally under braking, that is evident in many of the electric drivers' seats???

Cheers Roger - sorted that noise out with OEM stalks. Now have to find the noise only when someone is sitting in the passenger seat...

Got to agree Mark, the seat movement under heavy braking is a PITA! Never noticed with stock brakes though...a 4 pot thing? :-)

Mark,

Hi, I have exactly the same problem (nothing to do with my weight being 8% of the car's) and fixed it originally by tightening the seat to floor attachment bolts, one was quite loose at the back. It has returned intermittently after a year or so and along with the brake pedal click is high on the list of frigging annoying things to sort soon. I will have another look and let you know the real cause/fix. Previously on another Toyota I replaced the whole seat rack with a new one and the cure lasted less than two years (sigh).

I must send you my changer to get it aligned. I also still have the brand new EMV version which either needs the board exchanged or the Soarer with an EMV version, whichever is cheaper.

Regards

Oooh, cheek... ahh, typical envy from a V8 owner! :-)

Petrol cap is ToMoCo issued - shame about the shitty aftermarket fuel filler neck some dodgy QLD compliancer fitted though - had to weld the bugger on to avoid it leaking out between reseals!

btw, it was factory stock when purchased!

I've tightened every bolt in the seat and replaced the plastic thingy, TIF has details on that, seat rails are next I think.
Each time it goes back in it seems to be fixed ...for shorter and shorter periods.
Mine started doing it with standard brakes but the 4pots definately haven't helped..

Manny

Sorry, no cheek intended! I used to be owned by a ex works Carlos Saintz GT4 Group A which went from 0 to 100k in mods in less than 2 years. TTE parts prices were absolutely frightening. I thus have some small idea of the dedication and persistence not to mention cash required to do what you have done. I am envious but once was enough, when my 3rd air water intercooler got lunched by what looked like meteorite damage from yet another vaporized turbo the urge to go normally aspirated became irresistible. Mind you it was fun making the WRX's look silly and having a 2 litre car that could use 60 litres of fuel in 100 Km at speeds only readable from the tacho.

You weren't trying hard enough, try almost a Soarer tank in 90km at Wakefield Park

but seriously, I enjoy doing it all myself and savouring the experience and results - besides a man's got to have a vice...

those 3SGTEs can be wicked weapons when breathed on - you do know the 1JZ-GTE and 3S-GTE are very similar in design principles and share quite a few parts/specs

ok, back on topic mate :-)

Manny,

To be fair, that 60 litres of fuel in 100 Km was in the rain and not on a track. Not ever going to repeat it though. I am sure on the track the 3SGTE could get closer to 80 litres per 100 Km if the opportunity presented. Ahh memories The GT4 was great fun.

Staying off topic it amazes me the completely undrivable monsters people develop in pursuit of the 1000 Hp (for 1 Sec on a "special" dyno) Supra of doom when for less effort they could have a much nicer car on the same platform with a Soarer that would actually be enjoyable on a daily basis and still be able to humiliate WRX's. and EVO's.

Funny thing is all the EVO 8's where I live (Winthrop in WA) have had the rear disks replaced with little drums and the rear diff removed, must be some special high performance ultra light weight version. They also use a special exhaust system that is actually louder than no system at all, compensated for by a stereo that employs 400 Kg of chipboard and bog along with 200 Kg of amps and drivers to drown out the exhaust while making the door seals flap like reed valves on a 2 stroke. This is a bonus because it saves the cost of lowering the car via chopping the coils and the Shuttle launch bass levels blur your vision so much you can't see you are being overtaken by people on mopeds.

Still as you say a man has to have a vice, in your case a mistress would be probably be cheaper but it looks like your de vice is more fun. Having successfully hijacked my own thread I will now go back to fixing seat shifting problems.

Katrina,

Hi, The compliance process in Australia includes replacing the stalks as well as the seat belts. The replacement stalks are quite rattle prone and inferior in build quality to the OEM units. A pair of Toyota OEM Stalks is the way to go. The seat shake or clunk appears to be a wear issue with the electric seats, occasionally compounded by a loose mounting bolt. I have not found a definitive fix for this other than welding the slides which seems the wrong way to go. An english gentleman on another forum with a vivid mechanical imagination suggested the cure involved the use of washers but nothing I have tried along those lines has worked. Toyota seat rails have had similar problems on other cars I have owned and it may be inherent in the design they use. Some have lasted less than three years before a clunk became obnoxious enough to have me replace the slides.
