The area around where the boot lid supports close I can see staples and flaps of rubber. Is this normal or should there be something covering this area?

Yep, the rubber flaps allow the boot supports to move and the staples hold them in.

So I think you are saying this look is normal.
I would have thought Toyota would have done a nicer job than that.
I might have to buy a Nissan.
