How are you doing that? Are you using the original trim as a pattern for your new one? I did my Rx-7, but chickened out on the seats and sent them to a professional. I had him reshape them at the same time in a "HSV style" (his words!)

hey Ben, nah i actually covered straight over the top of the old one. i did it in two pieces and hand stitched them together, then because the vinyl doesn't stretch very well i didnt cover the arm rest but instead made up some inserts(6mm mdf with some foam) for it and stuck them on. i used some small bolts that were counter sunk in them so i could tighten the nuts from the bottom if i wanted to change the colour of the inserts. I'm probably going to get a professional to do my seats when i save enough.

your dogs liked it too. hehe.
Looks great
Seriously though, any more info on more pieces you have trimmed, where you bought and what type of materials, technique, would be greatly appreciated.
I have been planning on trying to re-trim my interior for a while, but my lack of knowledge and experience are putting me off, so I'm reading books, asking people and considering a TAFE course to get it done. Cheers

hey guys thanks. yeah the dogs are some nosey buggers as well.
I've done a little bit more. glove box, passenger door. the doors still aren't finished. I have to finish off the speaker mounts. I've started painting the plastic parts as well.
i originally tried using VHT vinyl Dye. however, i didn't like how it looked. it does a reasonably good job i just don't think i took enough time and care when using it. that's why i'm going with the new vinyl.
the vinyl i'm using is called Ford XD black and Ford XF grey. i have bought them from Daley's which is a wholesaler of vinyl. i bought 20m of it because it works out quite cheaper.
the glues i'm using are Daleys(own brand) vinyl glue and Jet Set vinyl and leather glue. they are used with brushes. daleys is spray grade if you have a gun for it. i dont. daleys is also thermally activated. you apply it to both pieces wait for it to become touch dry and then use a heat gun to heat it up and then stcik them together. be careful not to heat up the vinyl too much it will blister. if stick to plastic the surface should be "roughed" up before gluing.
the paint i'm trying is K+H Bumper and trim Paint, with K+H Plasti-Prime. both purchased from MALZ in W.A. it says you dont need the plasti-prime when using bumper paint i just figured why not. bumper and trim paint also has the flex built in so i decided it might last a bit longer. also make sure surfaces are cleaned with wax and grease remover.

Luke, those were already on the car when i got it. i have to fix them they have a lot of chips in them. they're not hard to make. i made some for my brother's car and a few friends. all you need to do is use mdf or even chipboard for the bulk of the shapes. fibreglass the rest if thats what you want to use(using epoxy resin, as poly resin doesn't bond well with wood) and then bog up the rest of whatever shape you want it. sand it down. and you're done. if using bog to do it. go and buy some Surform Blades. they come in flat and curved blades. great for filing away the bulk. they use them in wood work, plaster sculpting even panel beating i believe.

hey Adam, the plastic parts are painted with K&H bumper paint, along with their plastic primer. the rest of it is actually a new layer of vinyl over the top. glued on and then hand sewn together. i stuck the middle piece on and then stitched the side pieces to the middle one. i tried the VHT but i thought it looked crap. i'm gonna use the VHT on my carpet over christmas and see how it comes up.

i have the centre console area painted with the vht as i'm yet to change it, i'll post some pics tomorrow so you can see the diff between the VHT and just changing it for vinyl. its a bit more fiddly with the vinyl but it comes up a lot better.

had time so i got them up now. the vinyl is on the left(on the glove box) the VHT is on the right (around the console)personally i just think the VHT looks too glossy and fake.

Thats why i have never been a fan of VHT, its too glossy and you know it has been pained just like fake carbon fibre is easily spotted. Just out of interest did you use the black gloss or the flat black? That might be something to think about, i have never used VHT so not sure on the different in the final appearance but i know there is a non glossy flat black as i read on this forum.

Nah makes it look cheap and fake, how many fabrics/material do you know that are naturally reflective and shiney? Not many and its not something you find in cars which makes it stand out and look odd.
Its just like fake carbon fibre which doesnt know the depth of the weave in real carbon fibre. So fake looks like its 2d where as the real deal looks 3d. Same principle applies to VHT, you dont have to know anything about car but you will sense something is just not right.

yeah i could only get the gloss one when i bought it. i do know that would have a lot to do with the finish. i work with vinyls all the time not on cars but on orthotics(shoe insoles) you can buy glossy vinyls or matte vinyls they pretty much come in anything you can think of nowadays. the thing to think about is, i used vinyl that is marine grade(shouldn't fade from uv or water and is washable). painted or dyed things always run the risk of cracking, fading etc, even if you touch it up, if you don't do a good job you'll find yourself doing the whole lot again just to get the touch up even. in the end you do what you like, i just thought my attempt at the VHT made it look tacky, maybe i didn't do a good enough job.

Well in any case, we'll have to catch up in January, have a few beers and see what we can do
I want to do my trims in black but have the seats covered with a new leather cover. Some of the parts have been done black already so i want to finish it off.
